Electrical Double-Layer Capacitors Based on a Ternary Ionic Liquid Electrolyte Operating at Low Temperature with Realistic Gravimetric and Volumetric Energy Outputs

Emmanuel Pamete Yambou et al.

Summary: The electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) performed effectively at low temperatures (-40°C) due to the tuned characteristics of the ionic liquid (IL) electrolyte and carbonaceous electrodes. The formulated ternary electrolyte showed low viscosity and high conductivity, remaining in a liquid state until it reached the glass transition at -99°C. Carbon electrodes with well-defined mesopores facilitated ion transport and high volumetric energy outputs of the cells.

EMIMBF4 in ternary liquid mixtures of water, dimethyl sulfoxide and acetonitrile as tri-solvent-in-salt electrolytes for high-performance supercapacitors operating at -70 °C

Xuejun Lu et al.

Summary: This study designed a tri-solvent-in-salt (TSIS) electrolyte where every solvent (with IL such as EMIMBF4) contributed to the formation of an electrochemically active hydrogen bond (HB) complex structure. The TSIS electrolyte composed of 1.5EMIMBF(4):2H(2)O:DMSO:3.5CH(3)CN (5.8 m, TSIS-5.8) was cost efficient and exhibited self-extinction rates as low as 40 s g(-1).

Ion regulation of ionic liquid electrolytes for supercapacitors

Jianze Feng et al.

Summary: As a member of the liquid electrolyte family, ionic liquids (ILs) are characterized by distinctive chemical and electrochemical stability, making them a promising candidate for high-performance supercapacitors (SCs). However, the high viscosity and poor ionic conductivity of ILs have hindered their rapid development in SC applications. One potential solution is ion regulation to modify IL electrolytes, leveraging the tunable nature of anions and cations. This paper provides an overview of recent advances in ion regulation for IL-based SCs, exploring the impact on energy storage mechanisms and electrochemical performance of electrode materials and devices. Additionally, it addresses the challenges and future directions for optimizing IL-based electrolytes in the next generation of SCs.
