A BIM-Based Solution for the Optimisation of Fire Safety Measures in the Building Design

Mahdi Sabbaghzadeh et al.

Summary: This study developed a framework for improving building designs in terms of safe evacuation by using effective and economical fire safety measures at the design stage. The framework consists of four phases, including initial preparation, optimization with a meta-heuristic algorithm, decision making based on budget limits, and applying selected measures into BIM. The framework was evaluated through case studies of a residential building and a hospital building, and the results indicated its effectiveness.

Embedding knowledge into BIM: A case study of extending BIM with firefighting plans

Linlin Kong et al.

Summary: Building Information Modelling (BIM) has revolutionized the construction industry's production and operations management, but it currently lacks the ability to integrate expert knowledge information to guide the building activity process. To address this issue, researchers have proposed a method that utilizes a knowledge-embedded model and knowledge extraction algorithm to standardize and embed expert knowledge into BIM, enabling knowledge-driven automatic control.

BIM-Based Co-Simulation of Fire and Occupants' Behavior for Safe Construction Rehabilitation Planning

Seyedeh Tannaz Shams Abadi et al.

Summary: Construction renovation projects increase the risk of structural fire due to combustible materials accumulation and operational disruptions. Safety considerations are often simplified into rules of thumb, but utilizing simulation tools to integrate fire safety as a decision criterion with time and budget can lead to better construction scheduling. Using simulation to estimate required safe egress time for various construction sequencing alternatives can improve decision-making and overall project outcomes.
