Aggregation of carboxyl-modified polystyrene nanoplastics in water with aluminum chloride: Structural characterization and theoretical calculation

Yanyan Gong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal effectiveness and mechanisms of carboxyl-modified polystyrene nanoplastics using aluminum chloride as a coagulant. The results showed that a simple coagulation and sedimentation process efficiently removed a high percentage of PS-COOH from water, providing new insights for the treatment of nanoplastics pollution. This research highlights the importance of exploring effective removal technologies for mitigating the toxic effects of nanoplastics in aquatic systems.

Warming Stimulates Iron-Mediated Carbon and Nutrient Cycling in Mineral-Poor Peatlands

Holly J. Curtinrich et al.

Summary: Iron plays a crucial role in stabilizing carbon, phosphorus, and nutrient cations in terrestrial-aquatic interfaces and potentially releasing them through redox cycling. The impact of Fe redox cycling on carbon and nutrient dynamics is significant in peatlands, and warmer temperatures can promote the release of carbon and nutrients in these ecosystems.

Supposedly identical microplastic particles substantially differ in their material properties influencing particle-cell interactions and cellular responses

A. F. R. M. Ramsperger et al.

Summary: This study characterized the surface properties and chemical composition of two commercially available nominally identical polystyrene microparticles, revealing distinct differences. Cells exposed to particles with lower zeta-potential and higher monomer content showed more particle-cell interactions, leading to decreased cell metabolism and proliferation. This emphasizes the importance of well-characterized physicochemical properties when studying the effects of microplastics.

Measurement of microplastic settling velocities and implications for residence times in thermally stratified lakes

Hassan Elagami et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the settling velocities, particle distributions, and residence times of microplastic particles in lakes using experiments and model calculations. The size of the particles and the depth of the lake layer were identified as the main factors influencing the residence times. It was found that the settling velocity of microplastic particles did not significantly vary between pristine and colonized particles. The results suggest that there is a high probability of small microplastic particles being taken up by lake organisms due to their long residence times.

Comparative effects of crystalline, poorly crystalline and freshly formed iron oxides on the colloidal properties of polystyrene microplastics

Trang T. T. Vu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the colloidal properties of microplastics under the influence of different types of iron oxides. The results show that the effects of iron oxides on microplastic aggregation vary, and this variation is dependent on the pH of the environment. Heteroaggregation, resulting from decreased electrostatic interactions, is found to be the major mechanism governing the colloidal dynamics.

An evolving view on biogeochemical cycling of iron

Andreas Kappler et al.

Summary: The biogeochemical cycling of iron plays a crucial role in environmental processes such as ocean productivity, carbon storage, greenhouse gas emissions, and nutrient and contaminant fate. Recent studies have uncovered novel processes in the biogeochemical iron cycle and shown that oxidation and reduction of iron occur cyclically or simultaneously in many environments.

Interaction of cyanobacteria with calcium facilitates the sedimentation of microplastics in a eutrophic reservoir

Rico Leiser et al.

Summary: This study found that both sessile and planktonic phototrophic microorganisms play a crucial role in the densification and sinking of microplastics in freshwater reservoirs. The involvement of microorganisms mediated by calcium facilitates the processes of microplastic sedimentation, potentially leading to permanent burial within reservoir sediments.

Reconstructing the Environmental Degradation of Polystyrene by Accelerated Weathering

Nora Meides et al.

Summary: A long-term accelerated weathering study on polystyrene revealed that the degradation of microplastics proceeds in two main stages, with photooxidation dominating in the first stage and microcrack formation and particle rupturing accelerating degradation in the second stage.

Noxic effects of polystyrene microparticles on murine macrophages and epithelial cells

Julia Rudolph et al.

Summary: The study found that macrophages can effectively ingest microplastic particles, while epithelial cells did not show significant ingestion of microplastics. Macrophages from two cell lines exhibited high ingestion of microplastics of all sizes, but cytotoxic effects were only observed in one cell line. Cell populations with high particle interactions showed signs of cellular stress and effects on cell proliferation.

Application of Single-Particle ICP-MS to Determine the Mass Distribution and Number Concentrations of Environmental Nanoparticles and Colloids

Muammar Mansor et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the analysis of elemental compositions and size distributions of nanoparticles, colloids, and their aggregates in environmental samples using single-particle ICP-MS (spICP-MS). Various applications of spICP-MS in environmental samples were presented, including analyzing homoaggregation behavior, evaluating the mobility of toxic arsenic metalloid, and studying the composition of heterogeneous iron-carbon-rich colloidal flocs. The results provide insights into successful sample preparation and promising opportunities for spICP-MS applications in environmental research.
