COVID-19, a worldwide public health emergency

M. Palacios Cruz et al.

Summary: The emergence of the new coronavirus 2019-nCoV in Wuhan, China in late 2019 has caused a global public health emergency with a considerable number of cases and deaths. Despite a lower mortality rate, the rapid spread of the virus has prompted the activation of protocols to prevent its further transmission.

Spatiotemporal Characteristics and Resilience of Urban Network Structure during the Spring Festival Travel Rush: A Case Study of Urban Agglomeration in the Middle Reaches of Yangtze River in China

Shimei Wei et al.

Summary: With the increasing trend of globalization, large-scale and diffuse population flow have become vital carriers characterizing users' spatial behaviors. Network analysis provides a new perspective to uncover the topology and evolution of the population flow and understand its influence on regional development. Results show that although the changing trends of population flow during the 40-day SFTR of 2019, 2020, and 2021 are consistent, the population floating scale in 2020 and 2021 shows remarkable abnormalities before and after the Spring Festival due to the need for prevention and control of COVID-19.

Complex Urban Systems: Challenges and Integrated Solutions for the Sustainability and Resilience of Cities

Riccardo Gallotti et al.

Summary: This paper highlights the importance of viewing cities as complex systems with emergent phenomena. It discusses the need for a multilayer network modeling approach to better understand urban systems, and emphasizes the relevance of this perspective in addressing postpandemic challenges such as reconstruction of social fabric and adaptation to new emerging practices like remote working. The paper argues that enhancing social engagement and involving citizens in co-designing the city can lead to collective benefits and emergent effects.

Temporal and spatial analysis of COVID-19 transmission in China and its influencing factors

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: This study explored the temporal and spatial characteristics of COVID-19 transmission in China from January to October 2020. Factors such as environmental temperature, air pollution, migration, and government response intensity were found to have varying impacts on the transmission of the virus. Findings showed that environmental temperature inhibits the transmission, while air pollution and migration facilitate it, and stronger government intervention results in fewer cases.

Resilience of Urban Network Structure in China: The Perspective of Disruption

Shimei Wei et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatial patterns and structural characteristics of information, transportation, and economic networks among 344 cities in China based on 2017 data. By examining the resilience of network structure in interruption scenarios, the research found that information networks ranked highest in resilience, followed by economic networks and then transportation networks. The study also identified dominant nodes and vulnerable nodes that can help improve the resistance and recovery capacity of regions by strengthening emergency systems and risk prevention mechanisms.

Spatiotemporal patterns and influencing factors of human migration networks in China during COVID-19

Debin Lu et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted human migration, reducing overall migration intensity and changing the direction of migration in time and space. China's population distribution shows a diamond structure with dense east and sparse west, with migration networks centered on provincial capitals showing a center-periphery structure. Key factors influencing mass migration are income levels and traditional culture.

A Spatial Web Application to Explore the Interactions between Human Mobility, Government Policies, and COVID-19 Cases

Christopher Chapin et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant disruptions in human mobility, with initial rapid decrease in movement patterns. There is a complex relationship between mobility and COVID-19 cases, with a lag effect that varies over space and time. Spatial autocorrelation suggests that neighboring locations share similar patterns. The interactive web application provides a useful tool for visualizing these relationships and patterns.

Identifying borders of activity spaces and quantifying border effects on intra-urban travel through spatial interaction network

Meihan Jin et al.

Summary: Detecting borders of urban activity spaces is crucial for understanding urban dynamic structures. This study delineates activity space borders into natural, infrastructural, and administrative categories, evaluating their impact on intra-urban travel connections through a spatial interaction model. Introducing the concept of border thickness to measure the distance increase caused by each border, the study provides insights into the effects of different types of borders on urban activity spaces.

Network analysis of population flow among major cities and its influence on COVID-19 transmission in China

Jie Liu et al.

Summary: Large-scale and diffuse population flow amplify localized COVID-19 outbreaks into widespread pandemics. Network analysis uncovers the topology and evolution of population flow, influencing early dynamics of COVID-19 transmission. Simulating 42 transmission scenarios, higher total aggregate population outflows in major cities like Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Shenzhen than Wuhan indicate larger spread scopes and faster growth rates. Building an importation risk model identifies major cities with high total importation risk values, revealing core transmission chains and influential spreaders. By analyzing population flow networks, the effectiveness of travel restrictions on delaying epidemic growth and limiting COVID-19 spread in China was quantified, providing insights into geographical transmission patterns related to population flow networks' structural features.
