Physicochemical Characteristics of Chitosan-Based Hydrogels Modified with Equisetum arvense L. (Horsetail) Extract in View of Their Usefulness as Innovative Dressing Materials

Magdalena Glab et al.

Summary: The study focused on obtaining and characterizing hydrogels for potential use as dressing materials for chronic wounds. Synthesizing chitosan-based hydrogels modified with horsetail extract showed improved swelling ability and release efficiency in acidic environments. By adjusting the modifier and crosslinker, hydrogels with specific mechanical properties and wound exudate sorption ability could be prepared.

Physicochemical Characteristics of Chitosan-Based Hydrogels Containing Albumin Particles and Aloe vera Juice as Transdermal Systems Functionalized in the Viewpoint of Potential Biomedical Applications

Sonia Kudlacik-Kramarczyk et al.

Summary: Developed chitosan-based hydrogels containing albumin spheres and Aloe vera juice show enhanced resistance to tensile load and swelling ability when compared to traditional hydrogels. The presence of albumin supports the regeneration of epithelial cells and exhibits non-cytotoxicity towards murine fibroblasts. The modified hydrogels effectively release Aloe vera juice in an acidic environment with extended release time.

Synthesis, Characterization and Safety Evaluation of Sericin-Based Hydrogels for Controlled Delivery of Acyclovir

Moawia M. Al-Tabakha et al.

Summary: The study successfully developed polymeric matrices for the controlled delivery of acyclovir using sericin and acrylic acid, demonstrating thermal stability and drug release characteristics. Animal experiments showed good tolerance of the polymeric matrix up to 3800 mg/kg of rabbit body weight without adverse effects on liver and kidney function.

Design, fabrication and drug release potential of dual stimuli-responsive composite hydrogel nanoparticle interfaces

Narsimha Mamidi et al.

Summary: CNPs, as a type of nanocomposite hydrogel particles, were fabricated using an ionic gelation strategy and demonstrated dual (pH and thermo)-responsive controlled drug release in vitro. The results showed that CNPs disassembled at 55 degrees C to release the encapsulated drug molecules in a controlled fashion, indicating their potential as a promising drug delivery platform for the GI tract and colon targeted drug delivery.

Multistep Chemical Processing of Crickets Leading to the Extraction of Chitosan Used for Synthesis of Polymer Drug Carriers

Magdalena Glab et al.

Summary: This study describes the preparation of chitosan from crickets, comparing the chemical structure of the fractions obtained with commercial chitosan. The chitosan obtained from crickets showed potential as an alternative source to traditional shellfish, and the capsules prepared based on this chitosan were effective drug delivery systems, especially in alkaline environments.
