Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air Quality (FIREX-AQ)

Carsten Warneke et al.

Summary: The NOAA/NASA Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air Quality (FIREX-AQ) experiment aimed to study the impact of fires on regional and global environments and air quality. The experiment measured trace gas and aerosol emissions, observed fire dynamics, assessed fire modeling, and examined connections to ground and satellite observables. The experiment involved aircraft, satellites, mobile laboratories, and ground sites.

Direct measurements of ozone response to emissions perturbations in California

Shenglun Wu et al.

Summary: A new technique was used to directly measure O-3 sensitivity to precursor NOx and VOC concentrations in the atmosphere, and the seasonal pattern of O-3 sensitivity was found in California. The study suggests that emissions control programs should focus on reducing NOx levels to effectively lower peak O-3 concentrations.

Large contribution of biomass burning emissions to ozone throughout the global remote troposphere

Ilann Bourgeois et al.

Summary: Ozone, an important greenhouse gas, has negative impacts on human and ecosystem health. Biomass burning and urban emissions are significant sources of ozone precursors. Research indicates that the influence of biomass burning on tropospheric ozone is underestimated.

Observations Confirm that Volatile Chemical Products Are a Major Source of Petrochemical Emissions in US Cities

Georgios Gkatzelis et al.

Summary: Despite decreasing urban VOC emissions from on-road transportation, volatile chemical products (VCPs) have become a significant source of VOCs, contributing to a higher fraction of urban pollution in U.S. cities. The shift in emission sources necessitates quantifying the relative contribution of VCPs and mobile sources to urban air quality. Ground site and mobile laboratory measurements in Boulder, CO, and New York City show that VCP-dominated emissions account for a significant portion of anthropogenic VOC emissions, highlighting their important role in urban air quality.

Effects of Anthropogenic and Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds on Los Angeles Air Quality

Shan Gu et al.

Summary: The study highlights the significant impact of future urban greening programs that increase biogenic VOC emissions on urban air quality, offsetting the benefits of reducing anthropogenic VOC emissions. Therefore, urban greening projects need to consider both anthropogenic and biogenic VOC contributions to secondary pollution, and should choose vegetation types with low VOC emissions to prevent further degradation of urban air quality.

Volatile chemical product emissions enhance ozone and modulate urban chemistry

Matthew M. Coggon et al.

Summary: Decades of air quality improvements have reduced motor vehicle emissions, with VCPs now responsible for half of petrochemical VOCs in major urban areas. VCP emissions are widespread in US and European cities, impacting air quality, as illustrated by significant emissions in New York City. The study shows that VCP emissions, especially fragranced VCPs, have a significant impact on ozone levels in urban areas.

Long-term baseline ozone changes in the Western US: A synthesis of analyses

David D. Parrish et al.

Summary: Research shows that baseline ozone concentrations in the western United States have exhibited non-linear changes over the past few decades, with a rapid increase in the 1980s, slowing in the 1990s, peaking in the mid-2000s, and then slowly decreasing. The remaining variance is mainly attributed to unquantified data autocorrelation and meteorologically-driven interannual ozone variability.

Measurements of Total OH Reactivity During CalNex-LA

R. F. Hansen et al.

Summary: The study found that during the California Research at the Nexus of Air Quality and Climate Change field campaign, the measured total OH reactivity was consistently higher than the calculated values, with an average missing OH reactivity of 8-10 s(-1), accounting for approximately 40% of the measured total OH reactivity. The missing OH reactivity was likely due to a combination of unmeasured local emissions and unmeasured oxidation products transported to the site, with about 50% possibly coming from emissions of unmeasured volatile chemical products like pesticides and cleaning agents.
