Solea senegalensis Bacterial Intestinal Microbiota Is Affected by Low Dietary Inclusion of Ulva ohnoi

Isabel M. Cerezo et al.

Summary: The inclusion of U. ohnoi in the diet of Solea senegalensis can modulate the intestinal microbiota, with changes in bacterial composition and predicted microbiota functionality. The study provides important insights into the effects of seaweed dietary inclusion on fish and highlights the potential benefits and risks associated with its use in aquaculture.

Loss of gut microbial diversity in the cultured, agastric fish, Mexican pike silverside (Chirostoma estor: Atherinopsidae)

Jesus Mateo Amillano-Cisneros et al.

Summary: Teleost fish, as the most diverse group of vertebrates, have diverse digestive anatomical structures and strategies, leading to various host-microbiota interactions. This study focused on the digestive mechanisms and microbiota of agastric short-intestine fish, specifically the Mexican pike silverside, and found that gut microbial diversity decreased in cultivated fish compared to wild fish. Functional metagenomic prediction also showed variations in microbial populations related to amino acid, vitamin, cofactor, and energy metabolism.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of moderate dietary supplementation with the green microalga Chlorella fusca on growth, metabolism, and digestive functionality in juvenile thick-lipped grey mullet. The results showed that fish fed with the microalgae-supplemented diet had improved growth performance, fatty acid profile, metabolic response, and increased intestinal digestive and absorptive capacity.

A 20-year retrospective review of global aquaculture

Rosamond L. Naylor et al.

Summary: The sustainability of aquaculture has been intensely debated since 2000, with major contributions coming from inland aquaculture in Asia. There have been significant advances in feed efficiency and fish nutrition, but reliance on marine ingredients remains a challenge. Molluscs and seaweed have potential for ecosystem services and global nutritional security, but their quantification, valuation, and market development are still underexploited.

A Tentative Study of the Effects of Heat-Inactivation of the Probiotic Strain Shewanella putrefaciens Ppd11 on Senegalese Sole (Solea senegalensis) Intestinal Microbiota and Immune Response

Marta Dominguez-Maqueda et al.

Summary: Concerns regarding the safety, applicability, and functionality of live probiotic cells have led to the consideration of using non-viable microorganisms known as paraprobiotics. The study evaluated the effects of heat-inactivated cells of probiotic strain Shewanella putrefaciens Ppd11 on the intestinal microbiota and immune gene transcription in Solea senegalensis, and results showed differences in growth performance and modulation of the intestinal microbiota depending on the viability of the probiotics. Minor changes were detected in the intestinal immune response, with similar outcomes for both viable and inactivated probiotic cell supplemented diets compared to the control diet.

Recent progress in the understanding of the gut microbiota of marine fishes

Weihao Ou et al.

Summary: The importance of gut microbiota in fish is increasingly recognized, however, the understanding of the functional roles of gut microbiota in marine fish lags behind. Due to differences in environmental factors, there may be distinct differences in gut microbiota between freshwater and marine fish. Therefore, research on gut microbiota in marine fish remains crucial for further understanding.
