The most critical barriers were found in the philosophy category, affecting barriers in other groups. Barriers such as lack of leadership commitment, resources, lean consultants, systemic understanding of lean, and lean expertise were identified as the most critical causal barriers.

The study uses interpretative structural modeling (ISM) and MICMAC analysis to model and understand the inter-relationships of these CSFs. The results highlight the importance of sustainability in manufacturing systems, financial capability, and employee involvement in lean implementations in manufacturing SMEs.
