A conceptual framework for a systemic understanding of barriers during lean implementation

Summary: This study consolidates common lean implementation barriers across all industry sectors and attempts to understand these barriers systemically by determining causal relationships and their relative causal strength. The most critical barriers were found in the philosophy category, affecting barriers in other groups. Barriers such as lack of leadership commitment, resources, lean consultants, systemic understanding of lean, and lean expertise were identified as the most critical causal barriers.

This research aims to identify, evaluate, and rank the critical success factors (CSFs) of lean implementation in SMEs. The study uses interpretative structural modeling (ISM) and MICMAC analysis to model and understand the inter-relationships of these CSFs. The results highlight the importance of sustainability in manufacturing systems, financial capability, and employee involvement in lean implementations in manufacturing SMEs.
