Allocating and mapping ecosystem service demands with spatial flow from built-up areas to natural spaces

Jiake Shen et al.

Summary: A new method for mapping ecosystem services (ES) demand in co-urbanized areas was proposed, using four indicator clusters to characterize spatial flow and quantifying the distribution of ES demands in built-up areas and surrounding natural spaces. Effective regulation of high ES demands in different spaces can be achieved by controlling flow quantity, expanding flow area, increasing flow directions, and improving ES supply capacity.

Simulating PM2.5 removal in an urban ecosystem based on the social-ecological model framework

Xiangyu Luo et al.

Summary: Incorporating the concept of ecosystem services into urban planning and management practices helps improve urban ecosystem management, but the progress is slow due to political and technical barriers. By developing an urban ecosystem service model based on the social-ecological model framework and simulating the impacts of different policy scenarios, we can guide urban planning and management to enhance urban ecosystem services.

Identifying and setting the natural spaces priority based on the multi-ecosystem services capacity index

Jiake Shen et al.

Summary: The rapid urbanization has led to loss and fragmentation of natural spaces, reducing their ability to provide ecosystem services. This paper assessed five key ecosystem services provided by natural spaces in the Su-Jia-Hu area and calculated the multi-ecosystem service capacity index (MESC index) for each space. Results showed lakes and forests had the highest level of service supply, with a clustering analysis dividing natural spaces into six priority grades. The MESC index evaluation method proposed provides a scientific framework for identifying and managing important natural spaces in ecological network planning.

Understanding ecological groups under landscape fragmentation based on network theory

Yuhang Luo et al.

Summary: The study predicted habitat quality of ecological patches using an artificial neural network and species occurrence points, and proposed and identified ecological groups in the ESN network. It found 39 ecological groups and suggested that the existing policy cannot maintain connectivity among ecological groups, resulting in habitat isolation.

Using Bayesian Belief Networks to assess the influence of landscape connectivity on ecosystem service trade-offs and synergies in urban landscapes in the UK

James D. Karimi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of landscape connectivity on ecosystem service (ES) trade-offs and synergies in urban areas using a Bayesian Belief Network approach. The findings suggest that functional connectivity is the most influential factor determining ES trade-offs and synergies, with patch area and connectivity also playing significant roles. Low patch area and connectivity levels are associated with higher levels of ES trade-offs and synergies.

Using landscape metrics to characterize towns along an urban-rural gradient

Abigail Kaminski et al.

Summary: Urban-rural gradients are useful for examining the impact of human disturbances on ecological and social systems, with an integrated approach utilizing multiple landscape pattern metrics showing promise in defining more accurate gradient typologies. The outcome of cluster-based typologies differs significantly from rule-based typologies, highlighting the importance of considering landscape patterns in urban-rural gradient studies for effective resource management and conservation decisions. Future studies should consider more robust classification approaches to improve the accuracy of urban-rural gradient typologies.

Making the connection: combining habitat suitability and landscape connectivity to understand species distribution in an agricultural landscape

Melissa B. Youngquist et al.

Summary: The study found that in agriculturally-dominated landscapes, Blanchard's cricket frogs were more likely to occupy pond sites than stream sites. Habitat suitability and the number of interconnected habitat patches were the most predictive factors of cricket frog distribution.

Study on Ecosystem Service Value (ESV) Spatial Transfer in the Central Plains Urban Agglomeration in the Yellow River Basin, China

Min Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that the spatial transfer of Ecological Service Value (ESV) in the Central Plains Urban Agglomeration mainly showed an increase in transfer intensity from the hinterland to the metropolitan area, while a decrease in transfer intensity from the metropolitan area to the central city. Only a small portion of the total transferred ESV value reached the central city, and in some cities, the ESV spatial transfer range could directly reach the central city.
