Genetics of 35 blood and urine biomarkers in the UK Biobank

Nasa Sinnott-Armstrong et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the genetic basis of 35 blood and urine laboratory measurements in the UK Biobank, identifying 1,857 loci associated with at least one trait. Through Mendelian randomization analysis, 51 causal relationships were discovered, including previously known agonistic effects of urate on gout and cystatin C on stroke. Finally, by developing polygenic risk scores and building 'multi-PRS' models, genetic risk stratification for common diseases was improved.

Gene regulation contributes to explain the impact of early life socioeconomic disadvantage on adult inflammatory levels in two cohort studies

Cristian Carmeli et al.

Summary: Research indicates that individuals who experienced socioeconomic disadvantage in childhood are more likely to develop inflammation-related diseases later in life. The study suggests that transcriptional activity plays a significant role in mediating the effect of early life social exposures on adulthood inflammation levels. Additionally, the findings highlight that mechanisms other than cis DNA methylation may contribute to regulating transcriptional fingerprints.

The contribution of CNVs to the most common aging-related neurodegenerative diseases

Giulia Gentile et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases are neurodegenerative aging-related pathological conditions, with incidence rates expected to increase significantly with longer life expectancy. Copy number variants (CNVs) have been found to impact neurons, causing a decline in number with age and contributing to increased vulnerability to aging-related cell death. Further research into these variations is crucial for understanding the pathogenesis of these diseases.
