Potential optical molecular switch: Lithium@cyclo[18]carbon complex transforming between two stable configurations

Zeyu Liu et al.

Summary: Doping lithium atom in the C-18 carbon molecule can effectively regulate its optical properties, with the ability to control the state by switching the Li atom position through an external electric field. The two configurations of Li@C-18 exhibit distinct electronic structures and optical nonlinear properties, making transition easy to occur at ambient temperature.

The Appeal of Small Molecules for Practical Nonlinear Optics

Ivan Biaggio

Summary: Research has shown that small organic molecules with a pi-conjugated system equipped with donor and acceptor groups exhibit significantly lower optical excitation energies, leading to higher quantum limits to molecular polarizabilities. Consequently, these molecules demonstrate orders of magnitude larger third-order nonlinear optical polarizabilities compared to molecules of similar size without donor-acceptor substitution. These materials, which can be deposited from the vapor phase and electric-field poled at higher temperatures, offer strong third-order nonlinear optical effects and are competitive for integrating active nonlinear optical or electro-optic functionality into advanced integrated photonics platforms.

Modification of the Second Harmonic Generation and Fluorescence Efficiency of D289 Dye Based on a Donor-Acceptor Structure

Ying-Ying Peng et al.

Summary: Two water-soluble dyes with conjugated donor-acceptor structures were designed and their second-order nonlinear optical properties and fluorescence efficiencies were studied. The modified molecules emitted much less two-photon fluorescence than dye D289 due to nonradiative transitions caused by molecular motions in solution. TPAPM exhibited higher NLO performance than D289 and TPAP because of the strong electron pull-push effect operating along the D-pi-A backbone, making it a promising SHG probe molecule for multimodal imaging in biological applications.

A modifiable double donor based on bis(N-ethyl-N-hydroxyethyl)aniline for organic optical nonlinear chromophores

Qingzhu Zeng et al.

Summary: A strong modifiable double donor based on a bis(N-ethyl-N-hydroxyethyl)aniline-derived structure was developed and applied to nonlinear optical materials for the first time. With the introduction of isolation groups, the poling efficiency of the chromophores was improved by reducing the electrostatic interaction between molecules. The calculations showed that the chromophores had larger hyperpolarizability compared to traditional ones, making them promising in the design of organic nonlinear optical materials.

Critical Role of Non-classical Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonding in Affecting the π-π Stacking and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Tricyanofuran-Based Push-Pull Heptamethines

Di Zhang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel class of push-pull heptamethines based on TCF, which exhibit unique crystal packing and NLO properties. The optimized supramolecular assembly of these compounds, through a combination of steric effects, non-classical C-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonding, and intermolecular pi-pi stacking, leads to significantly improved EO coefficients and larger molecular hyperpolarizabilities.
