Chiroptical Properties of Symmetric Double, Triple, and Multiple Helicenes

Tadashi Mori

Summary: This review focuses on the chiroptical properties of multiple helicenes, with an emphasis on the impact of the arrangement of multiple helices on the chiroptical responses. Although the number of multiple helicenes reported is limited, insights into the design principle for advanced chiroptical materials through the proper arrangement of multiple helices are provided.

Chirality Amplified: Long, Discrete Helicene Nanoribbons

Xiao Xiao et al.

Summary: In this study, two polyhelicene frameworks were synthesized, with 18 and 24 fused benzene rings, respectively, exhibiting the largest electronic circular dichroism in the visible spectrum. These helical nanoribbons incorporate multiple helicenes, showing interesting chemical, biological, and chiroptical properties. Coupling with perylene-diimide subunits enhances chiroptic response, with the possibility of further enhancement by axial elongation.

The Helicenes: Potential Carriers of Diffuse Interstellar Bands

Jorge O. Ona-Ruales et al.

Summary: This work explores the potential of helicenes as carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands, with [26]helicene identified as a possible candidate for the 4502 angstrom DIB. Statistical and spectroscopic analysis support this identification, while aromaticity arguments suggest additional stability for helicenes. The study also proposes a feasible mechanism for the formation of helicenes in the interstellar medium.

A Spectroscopic View on Cosmic PAH Emission

Els Peeters et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules (PAHs) are abundant in the Universe and have significant impacts on the physical and chemical processes in space. Despite the inability to identify individual PAH molecules, collaborative efforts among astronomers, physicists, and chemists have provided constraints on the characteristics of the cosmic PAH family.

Detection of two interstellar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons via spectral matched filtering

Brett A. McGuire et al.

Summary: Unidentified infrared emission bands are commonly attributed to PAH molecules, and in this study, two nitrile-group-functionalized PAHs were detected in the interstellar medium. The study also discusses potential pathways for gas-phase PAH formation from smaller organic precursor molecules.
