Microgeophysics and geomatics data integration reveals the internal fracturing conditions of the statue of Ramses II (Museo Egizio, Torino, Italy)

Chiara Colombero et al.

Summary: The combined acquisition of 3D ultrasonic tomography and radar scans is increasingly used for cultural heritage diagnostics, proving efficient in detecting and locating fractures and weaknesses within artifacts. However, there is currently a lack of integrated approach for data interpretation. This study presents the results of radar and ultrasonic prospections on the statue of the young Ramses II, and proposes a data integration approach for joint interpretation, improving the readability of the final results and offering guidance to the museum for preservation and restoration of the masterpiece.

Three-dimensional deformation monitoring and simulations for the preventive conservation of architectural heritage: a case study of the Angkor Wat Temple, Cambodia

Fulong Chen et al.

Summary: This study proposes an adaptable methodology for the preventive monitoring of architectural heritage by integrating differential SAR tomography and a finite element method, aiming to overcome the limitations of current geodetic approaches in cultural applications. The experimental results demonstrate that while the Angkor Wat Temple appears stable, structural instabilities were detected with an absolute deformation rate of up to 3 mm/yr. Furthermore, daily changes in thermal-related deformations caused by solar radiation were identified as posing a risk of structural defects.

Deep learning reveals extent of Archaic Native American shell-ring building practices

Dylan S. Davis et al.

Summary: During the mid-Holocene, Native American groups in the American Southeast constructed shell rings, circular middens that provide insights into their socioeconomic organization. Recent analysis using deep learning and other technologies indicates that there are more shell rings than previously documented, and they were distributed further north than currently recognized.

High-resolution 3-D GPR applied in the diagnostic of the detachment and cracks in pre-Hispanic mural paintings at Templo Rojo, Cacaxtla, Tlaxcala, Mexico

J. Ortega-Ramirez et al.

Summary: Non-invasive methods, including the use of GPR, are increasingly being employed in conservation projects for cultural heritage. This study focused on pre-Hispanic mural paintings in the Red Temple of the Cacaxtla-Xochitecatl archaeological site in Mexico, using GPR surveys to assess the state of adhesion of mortar layers and identify detachment zones for planning restoration work. The results obtained from the GPR surveys are helpful for determining the degree of alteration in the support and planning for restoration or removal onto a more stable support.
