Property Determination, FA Composition and NMR Characterization of Palm Oil, Used Palm Oil and Their Methyl Esters

Omojola Awogbemi et al.

Summary: The search for an affordable and sustainable feedstock for biodiesel production has led researchers to investigate the thermal degradation of palm oil and its transformation into waste palm oil methyl ester. The physicochemical properties, fatty acid compositions, and nuclear magnetic resonance analyses of palm oil and its derivatives were studied. The findings indicate that the transformation process and the type of food the oil was used to fry significantly affect the properties and composition of the samples. The presence of ester carbonyl carbon in the waste palm oil methyl ester suggests its suitability as a biodiesel feedstock.

A review on mechanical-based microalgae harvesting methods for biofuel production

Mahyar Ghazvini et al.

Summary: Microalgae have great potential as a feedstock for biofuel production, but the high cost of harvesting makes their utilization economically unfeasible. Mechanical-based harvesting methods, such as centrifugation and filtration, are considered effective means of microalgae recovery, but they differ in terms of cost and efficiency. Centrifugation offers the highest cell removal efficiency but comes with the highest capital and operational costs, while sedimentation is relatively inexpensive and widely applicable. However, flotation needs to be combined with filtration, and may not be suitable for all algal cultures.
