Lay Etiology, Self-Efficacy and Patient Activation Among Cancer Patients

Saskia Welter et al.

Summary: This study found that cancer patients' explanations of the causes of cancer were influenced by demographics, self-efficacy, and patient activation levels. Men, younger people, and active patients were more likely to attribute cancer to internal causes, while women and religious patients were more likely to attribute cancer to external causes. Patients with higher self-efficacy scores were more likely to believe in external causes of cancer. Identifying individual beliefs about disease may help improve patient-physician communication.

Traits of cancer patients and CAM usage

Sabine Andrea Dufter et al.

Summary: This study found that higher education level, younger age, and religion-independent attentiveness are significant predictors for the use of material based CAM methods, while female gender, higher education level, and religious spirituality are significant predictors for holistic and mind-body CAM methods. The findings of this study can be integrated into conventional health care providers' practice to offer information about complementary medicine and meet patients' needs.

Factors influencing the usage of complementary and alternative medicine by patients with cancer

G. Ciarlo et al.

Summary: The interest in CAM among cancer patients is growing, with about 50% already using CAM alongside cancer therapy. Factors influencing patients' choice of CAM vary, with younger patients preferring biological therapies and women with gynecological cancer favoring holistic methods. Beliefs on cancer causes were not associated with the chosen CAM method among patients in this study.
