Green plant genomes: What we know in an era of rapidly expanding opportunities

W. John Kress et al.

Summary: Green plants are essential to ecosystems, human health, and agriculture, but generating and storing their genomes is a major challenge. Currently, there are fewer than 300 complete chromosome-scale genome assemblies for green plants, representing less than 900 species. Many species, especially those from extreme environments, still lack suitable tissue samples for genomic sequencing. The annotation of plant genomes also needs improvement.

Wild carrot diversity for new sources of abiotic stress tolerance to strengthen vegetable breeding in Bangladesh and Pakistan

Philipp W. Simon et al.

Summary: The field trials conducted in Bangladesh and Pakistan with crop wild relatives of carrot revealed new sources of heat and drought tolerance, demonstrating variations in response to climatic stress among germplasm resources. Similar performances in different countries were observed, suggesting potential for developing carrot varieties better adapted to climatic abiotic stress.

Genetic diversity structure of western-type carrots

Katarzyna Stelmach et al.

Summary: The study used two marker systems to detect substantial genetic variation among different market types of carrot plants, allowing for germplasm characterization and genome relationship analysis. The genetic diversity structure within the western carrot gene pool was revealed, pointing to discrepancies within the cultivars' passport data.

CottonGen: The Community Database for Cotton Genomics, Genetics, and Breeding Research

Jing Yu et al.

Summary: Over the past eight years, the volume of data generated by the cotton research community has exponentially increased, leading to the creation of the CottonGen online community database which provides access to integrated genetic and breeding data and analysis tools. The data stored in CottonGen includes genes, genotypes, and phenotypes, and the platform facilitates utilization of these resources for research on cotton crop improvement through curation and online tools.

A pan-genomic approach to genome databases using maize as a model system

Margaret R. Woodhouse et al.

Summary: MaizeGDB introduces a pan-genomic approach to hosting genomic data, allowing researchers to easily track the structural and functional differences of a locus and its orthologs across maize. This framework is believed to be unique and can serve as a template for other genomic databases hosting large-scale pan-genomic data.
