Core-shell and egg-shell zeolite catalysts for enhanced hydrocarbon processing

Thuy T. Le et al.

Summary: This study systematically assessed the impact of physicochemical properties on the performance of zeolite catalysts. The findings revealed that core-shell zeolites with ultrathin shells showed enhanced mass transport and improved catalyst performance. In addition, egg-shell configurations of zeolites exhibited higher total turnovers compared to their homogeneous counterparts. Overall, this study demonstrated the significant improvement in catalyst performance through the design of core-shell and egg-shell zeolites.

A diffusion anisotropy descriptor links morphology effects of H-ZSM-5 zeolites to their catalytic cracking performance

Xiaoliang Liu et al.

Summary: The morphology of zeolites plays a crucial role in determining their catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability, but it is challenging to define quantitative descriptors for this morphology effect. By introducing a new descriptor, the study successfully explains the morphology effect of sheet-like zeolites in C-4 olefin catalytic cracking, leading to improved catalytic activity and stability in samples with longer c-axis lengths. Time-resolved in-situ FT-IR spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations provide mechanistic insights for designing highly effective zeolite catalysts for olefin cracking.

Effect of External Surface Diffusion Barriers on Platinum/Beta-Catalyzed Isomerization of n-Pentane

Shen Hu et al.

Summary: A generalizable strategy has been developed to quantify the effect of surface barriers on zeolite catalysis using isomerization of n-pentane as a model system. Surface modification by SiO2 deposition was found to reduce surface barriers, improve diffusion, and increase catalytic activity of Pt/Beta catalyst. These results demonstrate that reducing surface barriers can effectively enhance zeolite catalyst performance affected by transport limitations.

A single-molecule van der Waals compass

Boyuan Shen et al.

Summary: Single-molecule imaging is a challenging yet beneficial technique for investigating intermolecular interactions at the molecular level, particularly van der Waals interactions at the sub-nanometre scale under confinement conditions. The use of a rotating para-xylene molecule as a pointer allows for real-space imaging and identification of changes in van der Waals interactions related to channel geometry. This study not only provides insight into host-guest interactions in porous materials, but also encourages further exploration of other single-molecule behaviors using electron microscopy techniques.

Constructing directional component distribution in a bifunctional catalyst to boost the tandem reaction of syngas conversion

Chang Liu et al.

Summary: The recrystallization method deals with the Cr2O3/ZSM-5 bifunctional catalyst to distribute the oxide on zeolite in an oriented manner, controlling the diffusion of the bridging intermediate and products in a directional way to enhance the tandem reaction of CO conversion to aromatics, achieving the highest performance data reported yet with a formation rate of aromatic rings at a 49.4% CO conversion.
