The relative contributions of root uptake and remobilization to the loading of Cd and As into rice grains: Implications in simultaneously controlling grain Cd and As accumulation using a segmented water management strategy*

Bo-Yang Huang et al.

Summary: The study indicates that different water management regimes have significant effects on the solubility of Cd and As in soil and their subsequent accumulation in rice grain. Water management applied at different growth periods has different impacts, with grain filling period having a greater influence on grain Cd concentration, while vegetative growth stage water treatment affects As concentration more. Additionally, the findings suggest that grain Cd accumulation is mainly from root uptake during grain filling, while grain As is mostly remobilized from within the plant prior to grain filling.

Physiological impacts of zero valent iron, Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 nanoparticles in rice plants and their potential as Fe fertilizers

Mingshu Li et al.

Summary: Fe-based nanoparticles, including ZVI and Fe3O4 NPs, can enhance rice growth under Fe-deficient conditions, but do not show positive effects under Fe-sufficient conditions. Fe2O3 NPs show phytotoxicity and hinder plant growth at high concentrations.

How do phytogenic iron oxide nanoparticles drive redox reactions to reduce cadmium availability in a flooded paddy soil?

Jiajiang Lin et al.

Summary: The addition of phytogenic iron oxide nanoparticles reduced the availability of cadmium in flooded soil and decreased its uptake by rice plants. Microbial community shifts were observed with an increase in certain bacteria and a decrease in others after the application of phytogenic iron oxide nanoparticles. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into a potential low-cost remediation strategy for cadmium-contaminated paddy soils.

Summary: In this study, nanoscale micronutrient iron prepared using marine macro alga Turbinaria ornata was found to be an effective priming agent for enhancing seed germination and growth of rice and maize crops. Additionally, foliar application of low concentration nanoscale micronutrient iron significantly increased chlorophyll content and yield attributes of rice and maize crops under field conditions.

Iron oxide nanoparticles ameliorated the cadmium and salinity stresses in wheat plants, facilitating photosynthetic pigments and restricting cadmium uptake

Natasha Manzoor et al.

Summary: Iron oxide nanoparticles synthesized from a bacterial strain can stimulate wheat plant growth in saline soil, alleviate abiotic stresses, and enhance nutrient concentrations in the soil while reducing harmful components in wheat grains. The application of FeO-NPs in Cd-polluted soil also reduces the uptake of Cd by wheat plants, making it a potential agricultural strategy for mitigating Cd and salt stresses.

Different effects of foliar application of silica sol on arsenic translocation in rice under low and high arsenite stress

Dandan Pan et al.

Summary: The study found that foliar application of silicon can reduce the arsenic concentration in rice shoots under low arsenite stress, but has different effects under high arsenite stress. The capacity of root cells to sequester arsenic in vacuoles has a threshold, where excess arsenic tends to accumulate in cell walls and transfer to shoots under high arsenite stress.
