CCUS As a second-best choice for China's carbon neutrality: an institutional analysis

Shengqing Xu et al.

Summary: The climate emergency requires decisive actions to reduce CO2 emissions in China. Despite progress in renewable energy deployment, barriers exist for large-scale deployment of CCUS. Institutional reforms are crucial to promote this second-best choice, including legal, policy and public engagement aspects. Strengthening international cooperation on CCUS technologies is also essential to address the climate emergency.

A systematic capacity assessment and classification of geologic CO2 storage systems in India

Vikram Vishal et al.

Summary: The study assessed the theoretical and effective CO2 storage capacities for different geological formations in India, identifying significant potential for CO2 storage in saline aquifers and basalt. Four storage pathways with adequate potential were identified, including CO2 enhanced oil recovery (EOR), enhanced coalbed methane recovery (ECBMR), storage in deep saline aquifers, and basalt formations. A novel classification system for different basins in India was developed to represent their prospectivity for CO2 storage.

A proposed global layout of carbon capture and storage in line with a 2 °C climate target

Yi-Ming Wei et al.

Summary: A global layout for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is crucial for limiting global warming, with a proposed strategy matching carbon sources and sinks in 85 countries and regions. The findings show economic feasibility with identified carbon clusters and sinks, but global collaboration is needed for implementation.

Understanding initial opportunities and key challenges for CCUS deployment in India at scale

Vikram Vishal et al.

Summary: India's CO2 emissions have been increasing steadily, prompting the need for effective strategies such as carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) to reduce carbon footprint. The combination of CCU and CCS is crucial in maintaining sustainable development. This multifaceted approach offers benefits for India's energy security and resilience.
