Selenium affects protein accumulation and its distribution in different protein fractions in developing wheat grains

Manpreet Kaur et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the impact of selenium on storage proteins accumulation and protein-bound selenium in developing wheat grains. Selenium treatments led to significant increases in selenium content in plant tissues, while causing decreases in total soluble proteins and various protein fractions in wheat grains. This research suggests that the excess binding of selenium to proteins may have deleterious effects, but can also be utilized for fortification of selenium-deficient foods and health supplements for populations lacking in selenium.

Transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome reveal the mechanism of tolerance to selenate toxicity in Cardamine violifolia

Shen Rao et al.

Summary: Analysis of Cardamine violifolia treated with selenate revealed upregulation of sulfate transporter genes and sulfur assimilatory enzyme genes, as well as downregulation of calcium proteins and cysteine-rich kinases, and upregulation of SBP1 and SDI2. This study offers novel insights into the mechanisms of Se accumulation and tolerance in plants.

A molecular switch in sulfur metabolism to reduce arsenic and enrich selenium in rice grain

Sheng-Kai Sun et al.

Summary: The study uncovered a gain-of-function mutant in rice that enhances arsenic tolerance, decreases arsenic accumulation in grains, and improves sulfur and selenium assimilation. This mutant promotes the physical interaction of key proteins in the cysteine synthesis pathway, leading to increased stress resilience and grain quality.

Transcriptomics analysis reveals the effect of Broussonetia papyrifera L. fermented feed on meat quality traits in fattening lamb

Xuejiao An et al.

Summary: The utilization of feed grains is increasing, leading to competition with human food sources. It is important to explore unconventional feed materials, such as Broussonetia papyrifera. This study analyzed the impact of different ratios of B. papyrifera fermented feed on sheep meat quality traits, revealing effects on muscle morphology, fatty acid composition, and gene expression related to metabolic pathways.

Selenium yeast promoted the Se accumulation, nutrient quality and antioxidant system of cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.)

Xiaoli Liao et al.

Summary: The application of Se yeast as a source of selenium significantly improves the growth and quality indices of Se-rich cabbage, leading to increases in total plant weight, head weight, and head size. Furthermore, the appropriate concentration of 8 mg/kg Se yeast enhances cabbage quality and antioxidant system indices.
