Topographic Stabilization of Ocean Rings

L. T. Gulliver et al.

Summary: This study proposes a plausible explanation for the longevity of large-scale ocean rings based on bottom roughness. The results show that topography stabilizes coherent vortices and dramatically prolongs their lifespan.

On transport tensor of dynamically unresolved oceanic mesoscale eddies

E. A. Ryzhov et al.

Summary: Parameterizing mesoscale eddies in ocean circulation models remains a challenging problem. Dynamically filtered eddies can address this issue by not requiring explicit spatio-temporal filters and enhancing the model's ability to reproduce the reference circulation. We uncovered the physical properties of these eddies and found that both the diffusive and advective parts of the transport tensor are significant, with the filamentation component dominating.

A novel identification method for unrevealed mesoscale eddies with transient and weak features-Capricorn Eddies as an example

Zhibing Li et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel eddy identification method based on the evolution of eddies in the temporal dimension, which efficiently avoids detection failure and excessive detection. Using this method, the characteristics and seasonal variations of Capricorn Eddies were resolved, providing a comprehensive overview crucial for understanding regional biogeochemical processes and ocean ecosystems. The developed method also has potential insight into uncovering eddies in the global oceans.

META3.1exp: a new global mesoscale eddy trajectory atlas derived from altimetry

Cori Pegliasco et al.

Summary: This paper presents the new global Mesoscale Eddy Trajectory Atlases (META3.1exp DT all-satellites, Pegliasco et al., 2021a; and META3.1exp DT two-satellites, Pegliasco et al., 2021b), which provide improved eddy identification and trajectory data. The products include supplementary eddy information, such as eddy shapes and speed profiles, and use a new detection algorithm based on the absolute dynamic topography (ADT) field. Comparison with the previous META2.0 product shows differences in eddy distributions and physical characteristics. The additional information provided by META3.1exp allows for more accurate collocation of mesoscale structures with data from other sources, making it recommended for multidisciplinary applications.

Steady radiating baroclinic vortices in vertically sheared flows

G. G. Sutyrin et al.

Summary: This study examines baroclinic vortices embedded in large-scale vertical shear and describes a new class of stable propagating vortices. These vortices can extract potential energy from a large-scale vertically sheared flow by generating Rossby waves, leading to meridional vortex drift and associated heat flux. The theory is confirmed by numerical simulations, showing that reduced potential vorticity gradient in the upper layer provides favorable conditions for eddy persistence and long-range propagation in westward flows in subtropical oceans.

A hybrid identification and tracking of Lagrangian mesoscale eddies

Anass El Aouni

Summary: This study presents a fully automated method for identifying and tracking mesoscale eddies in large oceanic observational and numerical model data, using a hybrid method based on Lagrangian advection and geometrical properties along with a clustering algorithm. The proposed approach successfully demonstrates high eddies' monitoring capacity by automatically identifying and tracking these structures from satellite-derived and fluid simulation datasets. The method provides complete dynamical features and evolution of detected mesoscale eddies by identifying genesis event, monitoring coherent core, and describing splitting and vanishing image.

Global changes in oceanic mesoscale currents over the satellite altimetry record

Josue Martinez-Moreno et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that mesoscale eddy variability has increased in eddy-rich regions but decreased in the tropical ocean over the past few decades. These changes have significant implications for the exchange of heat and carbon between the ocean and atmosphere.

Scale of oceanic eddy killing by wind from global satellite observations

Shikhar Rai et al.

Summary: Using satellite data and a recent method to disentangle multiscale processes, it was found that wind deposits kinetic energy into the geostrophic ocean flow at scales larger than 260 km while removing energy from smaller scales, a process known as eddy killing. This process occurs at all times with seasonal variability, peaking in winter, and removes a substantial fraction of the wind power input in western boundary currents, serving as a major dissipation pathway for mesoscales, the ocean's most energetic scales.

Ordering of trajectories reveals hierarchical finite-time coherent sets in Lagrangian particle data: detecting Agulhas rings in the South Atlantic Ocean

David Wichmann et al.

Summary: This study discusses the detection of finite-time coherent particle sets in Lagrangian trajectory data using the OPTICS algorithm, which has the advantage of detecting clusters of varying density and results in clusters with a hierarchical structure. The method successfully detected the expected vortices and rings in different experiments.
