Possible Causes of Anomalous Glacier Mass Balance in the Western Kunlun Mountains

Meilin Zhu et al.

Summary: Under the current global warming, glaciers in most of the Tibetan Plateau have been losing significant mass between 2000 and 2019. However, the glaciers in the western Kunlun Mountains (WKM) have shown positive mass balance during this period. The causes of this opposing trend and the temporal changes in glacier mass balance in the WKM have been actively debated. This study reconstructs the long-term mass balance of the Guliya Ice Cap in the WKM from 1970 to 2019 using an energy and mass balance model and calibrated ERA5 data. The study finds that Guliya had a positive mean mass balance between 2000 and 2019, primarily due to larger annual snowfall compared to low ablation-season meltwater caused by low air temperature. At an interannual scale, both ablation-season precipitation and air temperature equally influenced annual mass balances between 1970 and 2019.

Surface Sublimation/Evaporation and Condensation/Deposition and Their Links to Westerlies During 2020 on the August-One Glacier, the Semi-Arid Qilian Mountains of Northeast Tibetan Plateau

Shuhai Guo et al.

Summary: This study examines the links between glacier sublimation/evaporation, condensation/deposition, and westerlies. The results suggest that while the strong westerlies in winter bring dry and windy conditions, they do not cause the most sublimation loss due to extremely low surface temperature. The weakening of westerlies intensity and increased precipitation during summer suppress sublimation and evaporation, making condensation and deposition more likely. The study concludes that westerlies may not be the most crucial driver of glacier sublimation due to the restriction imposed by low surface temperatures during very cold weather.

Cloud forcing of surface energy balance from in situ measurements in diverse mountain glacier environments

Jonathan P. Conway et al.

Summary: Clouds play a crucial role in the climate system and their impact on glacier melt varies in different climates. By analyzing datasets from 16 mountain glaciers around the world, this study reveals the complex relationships between clouds, meteorology, radiation, and surface energy balance. The results highlight the importance of considering the effect of clouds on net radiation when assessing glacier response to climate change.

Estimation of mass and energy balance of glaciers using a distributed energy balance model over the Chandra river basin (Western Himalaya)

Akansha Patel et al.

Summary: The study developed a two-dimensional mass balance model to investigate the spatially distributed glacier surface energy and mass fluxes in the Western Himalaya. Results showed that net radiation is the major contributor to total energy during the melt season, while sensible heat, latent heat, and ground heat fluxes have smaller contributions. Sensitivity analysis indicated that albedo and surface radiations are highly sensitive factors affecting glacier mass balance in the study area.

Summary: The study simulated snowmelt runoff dynamics in the Kayiertesi River catchment in the Altai Mountains using high-resolution meteorological data and a hydrological model, showing the model's reliability for predicting snowmelt runoff. The research provides a sound basis for studying hydrological processes in cold regions and could be used to prevent snowmelt-induced flooding.

Energy and mass balance dynamics of the seasonal snowpack at two high-altitude sites in the Himalaya

Summary: The study highlights the importance of understanding snow dynamics in the hydrology of alpine catchments in the Himalaya. It emphasizes the intricate relationship between melt and refreezing on albedo sensitivity, the significance of meltwater refreezing, and the amount of net energy required to overcome the cold content of the snowpack. The results suggest that accurate simulation of mass balance in seasonal snowpacks in Himalayan catchments requires consideration of factors such as refreezing and cold content, going beyond simple temperature index models.

Summary: The Indus basin in High Mountain Asia has a high dependence on snowmelt runoff. Recent snow reanalysis data shows that basin-average snowmelt accounts for 25-30% of basin-average annual precipitation, with snow sublimation contributing 11% to the mean annual snow ablation, but with significant spatial variability across the basin.

Monsoon Clouds Control the Summer Surface Energy Balance on East Rongbuk Glacier (6,523 m Above Sea Level), the Northern of Mt. Qomolangma (Everest)

Weigang Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the atmospheric controls of the summertime glacier surface energy balance in the Himalayas using in situ meteorological data collected at 6,523 m above sea level. Cloud cover was found to play a crucial role in the surface energy balance, influencing the incoming longwave radiation more than the incident solar radiation during the active period of the South Asian Summer Monsoon. Furthermore, the comparison of glacier surface energy balances on the Tibetan Plateau revealed significant spatial variability in glacial sensitivity to different climatic conditions.

Summary: The study focused on the mass balance variation and drivers on the north-facing slopes of the Himalayas, particularly on the Naimona'nyi Glacier. It found that the annual mass balance was significantly correlated with annual precipitation and variability in melt energy. The increase in precipitation in the cold season and ablation season in the western Himalayas over the last two decades may be linked to various atmospheric circulation anomalies.

Distributed Melt on a Debris-Covered Glacier: Field Observations and Melt Modeling on the Lirung Glacier in the Himalaya

Summary: Debris-covered glaciers, especially in high-mountain Asia, have been increasingly studied in recent years. Field-based observations of distributed mass loss are limited, and factors affecting melt under debris cover remain poorly understood. Research on the Lirung Glacier in the Himalayas utilized multi-year observations to quantify variables influencing melt, highlighting the sensitivity of melt to thermal conductivity and debris thickness. The study also developed a simple melt model applicable for larger scale studies, showing promise for quantifying melt from debris-covered glaciers at a catchment scale.
