Interactions in dopamine and indole loaded thermosensitive hydrogels seen by high sensitivity microDSC. Implications for drug delivery

Anna Bulatko et al.

Summary: Controlled and targeted drug delivery systems are able to regulate the release of drugs. The interactions between dopamine and the thermoresponsive polymer matrix differ from those between indole and the matrix, resulting in different release behaviors, with indole exhibiting a slower phase transition rate and a lower phase transition temperature.

Is the Microgel Collapse a Two-Step Process? Exploiting Cononsolvency to Probe the Collapse Dynamics of Poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (pNIPAM)

Katja Nothdurft et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the collapse kinetics of pNIPAM microgels due to cononsolvency, revealing unique insights into the volume phase transition dynamics caused by cononsolvency. The experimental data show a two-step process of microgel collapse, with the deviation of the dependence between the two time constants and the microgel's diameter in the collapsed state from the square-power law proposed by Tanaka and Fillmore. This deviation is discussed in relation to adhesion-induced deformation of the gels and the physical processes underlying the collapse.

Tuning the Thermoresponsive Behavior of Surface-Attached PNIPAM Networks: Varying the Crosslinker Content in SI-ATRP

Sophia Thiele et al.

Summary: The synthesis and thermoresponsive properties of surface-attached poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-co-N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide (PNIPAM-co-MBAM) networks are investigated. The study shows that the ratio between swollen and collapsed heights characterizes the thermoresponsive behavior and is shown to not depend on network height but to vary with MBAM content. Investigating PNIPAM-co-MBAM networks on gold plasmonic nanowell arrays is a starting point for expanding their scope as thermo-controlled nanoactuators.

Accounting for Cooperativity in the Thermotropic Volume Phase Transition of Smart Microgels

Simon Friesen et al.

Summary: The swelling behavior of smart microgels depends on the polymer-solvent interaction parameter and the Hill parameter nu. With increasing concentration of the cross-linker, the Hill parameter nu decreases linearly, indicating its correlation with the number of water molecules cooperatively leaving the network chain.
