A push-pull strategy for controlling the tea green leafhopper (Empoasca flavescens F.) using semiochemicals from Tagetes erecta and Flemingia macrophylla

Yuqun Niu et al.

Summary: The study tested a semiochemical-based 'push-pull' strategy for controlling the tea green leafhopper in Chinese tea plantations. The results showed that certain compounds released from Tagetes erecta and Flemingia macrophylla repelled and attracted the leafhoppers respectively. This push-pull strategy proved to be effective in reducing the leafhopper population in field trials.

Protection against the Phytotoxic Effect of Mercury Chloride by Catechin and Quercetin

Yedda M. L. S. de Matos et al.

Summary: When plants are exposed to toxic levels of metals, they can suffer morphological or physiological damage. Phytoremediation, with the help of secondary metabolites produced by plants, can be used to remove these contaminants from the environment. In this study, the cytoprotective activity of catechin and quercetin in association with mercury chloride was evaluated on lettuce seedlings, and the results demonstrated that these flavonoids act as cytoprotective agents.

The Microbiome of the 'Williams' Pear Variety Grown in the Organic Orchard and Antifungal Activity by the Autochthonous Bacterial and Yeast Isolates

Tamara Janakiev et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the diversity of bacterial and fungal communities in the phyllosphere of the 'Williams' pear variety and evaluated the potential of native bacteria and yeast to inhibit phytopathogenic fungi. The dominant bacterial constituents were Pantoea, Sphingomonas, Hymenobacter, Massilia, and Pseudomonas, while the most abundant fungal representatives were Metschnikowia, Filobasidium, Aureobasidium pullulans, Botrytis cinerea, and Taphrina. The yeasts Hannaella luteola and Metschnikowia pulcherrima exhibited broad antagonistic activity against various fungal isolates.

The Role of Polyphenols in Abiotic Stress Response: The Influence of Molecular Structure

Dunja Samec et al.

Summary: Abiotic stressors such as extreme temperatures, drought, flood, light, salt, and heavy metals can affect biological diversity and crop production. Plants have mechanisms to cope with these stressors, and polyphenols, a group of plant-specialized metabolites, play a role in stress protection. Different polyphenol structures have varying biological activities and roles in abiotic stress responses.
