A Cavity-Tailored Metal-Organic Cage Entraps Gases Selectively in Solution and the Amorphous Solid State

Summary: This study reports the self-assembly of a truxene-faced Zn4L4 tetrahedron capable of binding the smallest hydrocarbons in solution. By incorporating inward-facing ethyl groups, the cage cavity was tailored to encapsulate methane, ethane, and ethene via van der Waals interactions. Interestingly, gas capture showed divergent selectivities in solution and the amorphous solid state, which may have implications for designing new processes for methane and ethane purification.

Gating the photoactivity of azobenzene-type ligands trapped within a dynamic system of an M4L6 tetrahedral cage, an M2L2 metallocycle and mononuclear MLn complexes

Summary: By incorporating a photoresponsive azobenzene linker into a doubly chelating bis(diimine)-type ligand, complexation with transition metal ions yielded structurally distinct metallosupramolecular architectures. These complexes exhibit reversible interconversions in solution by varying the M : L ratio, or turning into a dynamic library of mononuclear species upon addition of a competing monoamine. Despite the reversible photoactivity of the azo bond in the unbound ligand, the complexes are photochemically inert due to the inherent topology resulting from coordinate bond formation restrictions.
