Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids: Versatile Roles in Blood Pressure Regulation

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: Recent clinical trials have shown that increasing intake of foods rich in n-3 PUFAs is beneficial for hypertension by reducing oxidative stress, altering membrane-related proteins functions, and competing with n-6 PUFAs in regulating vasodilator release. Researchers are now focusing on the metabolism of n-3 PUFAs and exploring molecular mechanisms of n-3 PUFAs and oxylipins in hypertension interventions.

Plasma ceramides containing saturated fatty acids are associated with risk of type 2 diabetes

Amanda M. Fretts et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that different types of saturated fatty acids bound to sphingolipids may affect their biological activity. This study investigated the associations of various ceramide and sphingomyelin species with incident type 2 diabetes. The results suggest that higher levels of specific ceramide species (Cer-16, Cer-18, Cer-20, Cer-22) are associated with an increased risk of diabetes.
