Thyroidectomies in Italy: A Population-Based National Analysis from 2001 to 2018

Daniela Pierannunzio et al.

Summary: In Italy, the age-standardized rates of thyroidectomies in women peaked in 2002-2004 and then declined, while no significant change was observed in men. There was a more than twofold difference between regions. The proportion of total thyroidectomies increased in both sexes, while thyroidectomies for nonmalignant conditions decreased consistently.

Combination Strategies Involving Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors and Tyrosine Kinase or BRAF Inhibitors in Aggressive Thyroid Cancer

Francesca Ragusa et al.

Summary: Thyroid cancer is the most common type of endocrine-system tumor, accounting for the majority of deaths from endocrine cancers. High-throughput genomics has identified potential targets for survival and progression. Targeted therapy and immunotherapy have limitations individually, but can be overcome by combining them.

The epidemiological landscape of thyroid cancer worldwide: GLOBOCAN estimates for incidence and mortality rates in 2020

Margherita Pizzato et al.

Summary: The incidence rates of thyroid cancer in 2020 were higher in high human development index countries compared to low and medium human development index countries. However, mortality rates were relatively similar across different settings. This suggests an overdiagnosis effect in many countries and confirms the relevance of thyroid cancer overdiagnosis as a global public health problem.

Current practice in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer

Martin Schlumberger et al.

Summary: Considerable changes have occurred in the management of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) over the past four decades, with improved diagnostic tools and prognostic classifications available. Low-risk patients make up the majority with good outcomes, while high-risk patients require more aggressive treatment and follow-up due to frequent recurrences.

Radiation Exposure to the Thyroid After the Chernobyl Accident

Vladimir Drozdovitch

Summary: The Chernobyl accident led to significant release of radioactive material, especially I-131, causing increased thyroid cancer and diseases. Individual and population-average thyroid doses varied, with I-131 intake being the main exposure pathway. Individual doses due to different exposure pathways had uncertainties associated with them.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

The utility of ThyroSeq(R) in the management of indeterminate thyroid nodules by fine-needle aspiration

Wencheng Li et al.

Summary: ThyroSeq significantly reduced the surgical resection rate of ITNs without significantly affecting the malignancy detection rate. Positive molecular testing significantly increased the risk of malignancy in ITNs, indicating the importance of incorporating recalculated ROM into the management of ITNs.
