Surface confinement of per-fluoroalkyl substances on an iron-decorated clay-cyclodextrin composite enables rapid oxidation by hydroxyl radicals

Samapti Kundu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the removal and oxidation of seven perfluorinated compounds using an iron-clay-cyclodextrin polymer composite. The composite showed excellent adsorption and efficient oxidation, especially towards high molecular weight compounds. It also exhibited stable degradation activity even after multiple cycles. These findings suggest that composites promoting surface confinement of pollutants can be used for efficient removal and destruction of highly recalcitrant pollutants.

Elucidating degradation mechanisms for a range of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) via controlled irradiation studies

David Patch et al.

Summary: This study aimed to elucidate and refine the current understanding of PFAS degradation mechanisms in water through controlled gamma irradiation experiments. It was found that aqueous electrons were the key reactive species responsible for initial PFAS degradation, and the initial -F/+H can occur throughout the chain length, leading to more complex degradation pathways.

Sequential C-F bond functionalizations of trifluoroacetamides and acetates via spin-center shifts

You-Jie Yu et al.

Summary: A general strategy for sequential carbon-fluorine (C-F) bond functionalizations of trifluoroacetamides and trifluoroacetates has been described, enabling the sequential generation of difluoro- and monofluoroalkyl radicals for diverse fluorinated products. The reaction mechanism and chemoselectivity were established through experimental and computational approaches.

Destruction of perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) in a batch supercritical water oxidation reactor

Brian R. Pinkard et al.

Summary: Effective technologies, such as supercritical water oxidation (SCWO), are needed for the destruction of PFAS. This study found that destruction and defluorination efficiencies of PFOS via SCWO were influenced by temperature and residence time, with a maximum 70.0% PFOS destruction and 78.2% defluorination achieved at 500 degrees C after 60 minutes of reaction.

PFAS removal by ion exchange resins: A review

Fuhar Dixit et al.

Summary: Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large family of anthropogenic organic compounds with a wide range of industrial and commercial applications, and have raised global concerns due to their toxicity and bio-accumulative properties. The ion exchange (IX) process has been found to be an efficient technology for the remediation of PFAS-laden surface, ground and effluent wastewaters.

Heterogeneous Fenton Chemistry Revisited: Mechanistic Insights from Ferrihydrite-Mediated Oxidation of Formate and Oxalate

Yufan Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that the adsorption and decomposition of formate and H2O2 in the presence of freshly formed ferrihydrite are controlled by surface-initiated reactions, affecting the surface Fenton reactions. Oxidation mainly occurs in the solid-liquid boundary layer, rather than in bulk or on the surface.
