Tailoring of Hierarchical Porous Freeze Foam Structures

David Werner et al.

Summary: Freeze foaming is a method for producing cellular ceramic scaffolds with a hierarchical porous structure. The study investigated the formation of macrostructure and microstructure separately, depending on the suspension composition and pressure reduction rate. The foaming behavior was characterized using in-situ radiographical and CT evaluation, showing potential for tuning the macro- and microstructure with different porosities.

Investigations of the failure behaviors of open-cell copper foam based on in-situ X-ray tomography compression experiments and image reconstructed finite element modeling

Yunzhu Ni et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the deformation features and internal local failure behaviors of open-cell copper foams through in situ compression experiments and 3D imaging techniques. The study reconstructs the geometrical topological features of deformed samples and identifies different geometrical components. Finite element models are constructed to simulate the deformation process, and the results reveal plastic strain localization and structure collapses during compression.

Mechanically Stable β-TCP Structural Hybrid Scaffolds for Potential Bone Replacement

Matthias Ahlhelm et al.

Summary: The authors successfully manufactured mechanically stable beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) structural hybrid scaffolds using additive manufacturing and Freeze Foaming technologies. The resulting bone construct showed a 25-fold increased compressive strength compared to the pure CaP Freeze Foam and excellent biocompatibility with human osteoblastic MG-63 cells.
