Fatigue crack growth analysis of welded bridge details

Danilo D'Angela et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the fatigue crack growth in typical bridge weldments using numerical analysis. The study combines the extended finite element method with the low-cycle fatigue approach and conducts parametric analyses to assess the influence of sample and testing features on the fatigue life of the structures. The numerical results are verified to be robust and reliable through comparisons with experimental data and design correlations.

Analysis of dynamic fracture propagation in steel pipes using a shell-based constant-CTOA fracture model

Chris Bassindale et al.

Summary: This paper presents a finite element (FE) model for simulating dynamic fracture propagation in steel pipes. The model uses shell elements and a constant crack tip opening angle (CTOA) as a fracture criterion. The model improves computational efficiency while maintaining a high level of accuracy. The proposed model successfully reproduces data from existing CTOA models and reduces computational time. It is demonstrated to be an efficient method for analyzing experimental data.

A new ductile fracture model for structural metals considering effects of stress state, strain hardening and micro-void shape

Wenchao Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a new micromechanically-motivated phenomenological uncoupled fracture model is proposed for predicting the ductile fracture of structural metals. The model considers the combinative effects of stress state, strain hardening, and micro-void shape, and establishes an explicit and quantitative relationship between the ductility, strength, and microstructure of metals. The model parameters have intuitive physical meanings and can be easily calibrated via conventional tests.

Fracture response of mitred X70 pipeline with crack defect in butt weld: Experimental and numerical investigation

Jinxu Jiang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the fracture response and crack driving force of mitred butt girth weld pipeline with crack defect through experiments and numerical simulations. The results show that factors such as mitre angle and wall thickness affect the crack driving force. The proposed hybrid prediction model based on support vector regression and particle swarm optimization demonstrates relative accuracy and feasibility.

Computational modelling of Cold-formed steel lap joints with screw fasteners

Guan Quan et al.

Summary: A nonlinear explicit dynamic finite element (FE) model was developed to address the lack of a robust numerical method for the modelling of behaviors of screw fasteners in CFS thin plates. The proposed model improved by introducing a ductile fracture criterion and carefully modelling the threads to better account for the inter-locking capacity between screws and steel sheets. Comparing the FE modelled results against test results showed good agreement in terms of connection strength and failure modes, leading to parametric studies on the influence of steel sheet thickness and screw outer diameter on force-displacement relationships in steel lap joints.
