Development and application of fish scale wastes as versatile natural biomaterials

Di Qin et al.

Summary: Fish scales are a unique natural biomaterial mainly composed of type I collagen and hydroxyapatite, with hierarchical microstructures similar to human hard tissues. Despite their potential applications in various fields, the limited commercial value of fish scales hinders their practical use, calling for conversion and reuse to reduce environmental impact and create commercial value.

Preparation of citric acid-modified poly(vinyl alcohol) films for effectively precipitating calcium phosphate particles

Yanni Zhou et al.

Summary: We have developed a biomimetic process to achieve effective calcium phosphate particle precipitation on poly(vinyl alcohol) films. By controlling the exposure of carboxylate ions and esterification reaction in the films, Ca2+-carboxylate ion interactions were formed, leading to successful precipitation of calcium phosphate on the films. This technology has the potential to control the density and size of the precipitated particles and can be applied on polymeric films.
