Impact of high-intensity interval training with or without l-citrulline on physical performance, skeletal muscle, and adipose tissue in obese older adults

Vincent Marcangeli et al.

Summary: The study found that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is beneficial for obese older adults, improving muscle function, functional capacities, body composition, and waist circumference. Adding citrulline (CIT) further enhances muscle strength and significantly reduces fat mass. HIIT also increases markers of mitochondrial biogenesis, fusion, and mitophagy.

Human skeletal muscle mitochondrial dynamics in relation to oxidative capacity and insulin sensitivity

Summary: The study compared different groups of participants based on aerobic capacity and insulin sensitivity, finding that individuals with type 2 diabetes and obesity have compromised mitochondrial networks in skeletal muscle, while lean individuals and athletes show better quality control of mitochondria.

Human skeletal muscle fiber type-specific responses to sprint interval and moderate-intensity continuous exercise: acute and training-induced changes

Lauren E. Skelly et al.

Summary: Limited and equivocal data exist regarding potential fiber type specific differences in the human skeletal muscle response to sprint interval training (SIT) compared to moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT). A study examining mixed-muscle and fiber type-specific responses to a single session and 12 weeks of MICT and SIT found similar acute responses but differential long-term responses in type I fibers. Both MICT and SIT elicited similar responses in signaling proteins involved in mitochondrial biogenesis, but MICT induced greater increases in type I fiber-specific markers of mitochondrial content compared to SIT over 12 weeks of training.

Excessive exercise training causes mitochondrial functional impairment and decreases glucose tolerance in healthy volunteers

Mikael Flockhart et al.

Summary: Exercise training positively affects metabolic health, but excess exercise may lead to reduced mitochondrial function and impaired glucose tolerance. Studies have shown that world-class endurance athletes have issues with glucose control compared to matched control groups.

Summary: Measurement of mitochondria-SR juxtaposition depends on the experience of the rater, and Mfn2 protein seems to play a role in the metabolic control of human men skeletal muscle.

Mass-spectrometry-based proteomics reveals mitochondrial supercomplexome plasticity

Alba Gonzalez-Franquesa et al.

Summary: The study examines mitochondrial supercomplexes in skeletal muscle using native electrophoresis and mass spectrometry, revealing non-stoichiometric changes in subunits and assembly proteins after exercise-induced mitochondrial biogenesis. These alterations impact mitochondrial respiration and highlight complexities in mitochondrial plasticity previously unseen.
