Analysis of Carbon and Hydrogen Stable Isotope Ratios of Phenolic Compounds: Method Development and Biodegradation Applications

Natalia Malina et al.

Summary: This study developed and validated a method based on gas chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry for analyzing the hydrogen and carbon isotope ratios of phenolic compounds, aiming to study their sources and degradation pathways in the environment. Results showed that the variation in hydrogen and carbon isotope ratios can indicate different enzymatic reactions, helping distinguish the mechanisms of different microbes in the degradation process.

Review on pretreatment techniques to improve anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge

V Khanh Nguyen et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion (AD) of sewage sludge is an efficient remediation technique, but the presence of complex floc structures and high organic matter content hinder hydrolysis. Pretreatment techniques such as mechanical, chemical, thermal, and biological processes can accelerate hydrolysis and improve AD efficiency.

The Glycyl Radical Enzyme Arylacetate Decarboxylase from Olsenella scatoligenes

Qiang Lu et al.

Summary: The study reports a new GRE enzyme called Arylacetate Decarboxylase (AAD) which catalyzes the decarboxylation of p-hydroxyphenylacetate and p-aminophenylacetate, showcasing distinct substrate ranges and active site structures compared to HPAD. The structural differences suggest different catalytic mechanisms, highlighting the diversity of radical-mediated decarboxylation reactions.

Ethylbenzene and toluene interactions with biochar from municipal solid waste in single and dual systems

Yohan Jayawardhana et al.

Summary: The study investigated the adsorptive removal of toluene and ethylbenzene from aqueous media using biochar derived from municipal solid waste at temperatures ranging from 25 to 45 degrees Celsius. The adsorption was mildly pH-dependent, with peak adsorption occurring at a pH of around 8 in both single and binary contaminant systems. The Langmuir and Hill models were found to fit the isotherm results well for toluene and ethylbenzene adsorption in single contaminant environments.

Impact of process parameters of thermal alkaline pretreatment on biogas yield and dewaterability of waste activated sludge

Vahid Toutian et al.

Summary: Thermal alkaline pretreatment (TAP) of waste activated sludge (WAS) before anaerobic digestion (AD) can increase biomethane yield, with the effect depending on the initial biodegradability of the waste. Parameters such as treatment temperature, alkali dosage, and treatment time have significant impacts on the yield and should be carefully controlled. Further research is needed to understand the effects of TAP on the kinetics of the entire AD process and digestate dewaterability.

The microbial metabolite p-Cresol induces autistic-like behaviors in mice by remodeling the gut microbiota

Patricia Bermudez-Martin et al.

Summary: The microbial metabolite p-Cresol induces ASD-like behavioral symptoms in mice, particularly social behavior deficits, and is associated with decreased activity of central dopamine neurons. These behavioral deficits induced by p-Cresol can be transferred via fecal microbiota transplantation and are dependent on changes in microbiota composition.
