Reciprocity of thermal diffusion in time-modulated systems

Summary: The reciprocity principle governs the symmetry in transmission of electromagnetic and acoustic waves, as well as the diffusion of heat. Recent interest in materials with time-modulated properties has shown efficient breaking of reciprocity for various forms of diffusion. However, time modulation may not be a viable approach to break thermal reciprocity. Our theoretical framework and experimental demonstration highlight the generally preserved nature of thermal reciprocity in dynamic materials.

Thermal Waves and Heat Transfer Efficiency Enhancement in Harmonically Modulated Turbulent Thermal Convection

Summary: In this study, we investigate turbulent Rayleigh-Bernard convection across a wide range of Rayleigh numbers while harmonically modulating the temperatures of the plates in our experimental setup. By using temperature sensors placed inside the cell and embedded in highly conducting copper plates, we observe thermal waves propagating at the modulation frequency in the convective flow. Our findings confirm a recent numerical prediction of a significant enhancement of the Nusselt number and reveal its dependence on the frequency and amplitude of the temperature modulation of the plates.

Summary: This study introduces a thermal-wave diode based on the modulation of thermal conductivity and volumetric heat capacity, achieving rectification of heat currents through the wavelike modulation of thermal properties. The rectification factor can be optimized and tuned by adjusting the speed and phase difference of the variations of heat capacity and thermal conductivity, leading to high rectification factors exceeding 86% at lower frequencies driving the propagation of thermal waves. This thermal-wave diode, analogous to its electronic counterpart, has the potential to pave the way for developing various types of thermal-wave logic components.
