The Molecular and Mechanical Characteristics of Biomimetic Composite Dental Materials Composed of Nanocrystalline Hydroxyapatite and Light-Cured Adhesive

Pavel Seredin et al.

Summary: The application of biomimetic strategies and nanotechnologies has led to the development of a new class of modern adhesion restoration materials, including different nanofillers. This study analyzes the molecular properties of biomimetic adhesives and identifies the optimal composition for high polymerisation and mechanical hardness. The introduction of nano-cHAp fillers in the adhesive matrix results in changes in chemical bonding, increasing the hardness and degree of conversion of the adhesive.

Measures of Bone Mineral Carbonate Content and Mineral Maturity/Crystallinity for FT-IR and Raman Spectroscopic Imaging Differentially Relate to Physical-Chemical Properties of Carbonate-Substituted Hydroxyapatite

Erik A. Taylor et al.

Summary: This study investigated the validation of Raman and FT-IR spectroscopy in assessing bone mineral composition, showing Raman's greater sensitivity to carbonate content and FT-IR's greater sensitivity to crystal size. Additionally, FT-IR was able to detect differences in the relationship between MMC and crystal size of different types of hydroxyapatite, providing insight into the strengths and limitations of spectroscopy in analyzing native bone mineral.

Raman and XANES Spectroscopic Study of the Influence of Coordination Atomic and Molecular Environments in Biomimetic Composite Materials Integrated with Dental Tissue

Dmitry Goloshchapov et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of coordination environment, calcium, and phosphorus atomic states on biomimetic dental composites, finding that biomimetic materials can mimic the molecular and energetic properties of dental tissues. The features of the molecular structure of biomimetic composites are mainly inherited from nano-cHAp and the amino acid cocktail, contributing to the integration with natural tissue.

Cell-Free Biomimetic Mineralization Strategies to Regenerate the Enamel Microstructure

Yu Yuan Zhang et al.

Summary: The unique structure of native enamel gives it exquisite appearance and toughening properties, but damage to enamel is irreversible. Current clinical treatment for enamel lesions is invasive and has limitations, while biomimetic mineralization techniques offer promise for non-invasive enamel restoration.

Building an aprismatic enamel-like layer on a demineralized enamel surface by using carboxymethyl chitosan and lysozyme-encapsulated amorphous calcium phosphate nanogels

Jinhua Song et al.

Summary: This study aimed to prepare CMC/LYZ-ACP nanogels for controlled delivery of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) to form an aprismatic enamel-like layer on demineralized enamel. The nanogels were negatively charged spherical structures with a particle size of approximately 300 nm, and at high concentrations of NaCl, ACP was dissociated from the nanogels and transformed into hydroxyapatite (HAP).

Comparison of the Effect of the Amino Acids on Spontaneous Formation and Transformation of Calcium Phosphates

Ina Erceg et al.

Summary: This study compared the influence of different classes of amino acids on calcium phosphate formation and transformation, with results showing that all investigated amino acids inhibited the conversion of amorphous calcium phosphate except for phenylalanine, and serine being the most effective inhibitor. Calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite was the main transformation product, with different amino acids affecting the size of crystalline domains and CaDHA morphology. EPR spectra showed different radical species proportions depending on the type of amino acid present.

Analysis of in vitro demineralised human enamel using multi-scale correlative optical and scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution synchrotron wide-angle X-ray scattering

Cyril Besnard et al.

Summary: In this study, a multi-scale correlative approach was used to compare artificially demineralised human enamel with healthy enamel, revealing structural differences at the micron to sub-micron scale. The decrease in Ca/P atomic % ratio in etched samples compared to healthy enamel, as shown by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, suggests greater loss of calcium. Synchrotron wide-angle X-ray scattering was employed to analyze differences in lattice structure and texture before and after etching, providing insights into the demineralisation-induced enamel structure alteration.
