Global sea-level budget and ocean-mass budget, with a focus on advanced data products and uncertainty characterisation

Martin Horwath et al.

Summary: Studies on the global sea-level budget and ocean-mass budget are crucial for understanding the reliability of sea-level change and its contributors. In this study, datasets for the sea-level budget and ocean-mass budget were analyzed using a consistent framework of uncertainty characterization. The findings show that the sea-level rise trend aligns with the sum of the mass and steric components.

Re-assessing global water storage trends from GRACE time series

B. D. Vishwakarma et al.

Summary: Monitoring changes in freshwater availability is crucial for human society and sustainable economic development. Linear trends in total water storage (TWS) are often computed to identify regions experiencing changes, but they can only be interpreted in a meaningful way after accounting for natural spatiotemporal variability in TWS. A novel metric, trend to variability ratio (TVR), is developed to assess the severity of TWS trends observed by GRACE, providing a more informative assessment of water storage change. This study reveals that regions facing severe water storage depletion and unprecedented loss in hydrological catchments, affecting over 3.2 billion people, can benefit from improved water resource management.

An ensemble approach to quantify global mean sea-level rise over the 20th century from tide gauge reconstructions

M. D. Palmer et al.

Summary: The study introduces an ensemble approach for quantifying historical global mean sea-level rise, which provides a conservative estimate of total uncertainty by combining internal and structural uncertainties. Comparisons with past assessments and satellite altimeter data show good agreement with the results. Sensitivity tests demonstrate the robustness of the estimates to variations in reference period and central estimate timeseries, indicating potential applications to other global or regional climate change indicators.

Local sea level trends, accelerations and uncertainties over 1993-2019

Pierre Prandi et al.

Summary: Satellite altimetry missions offer a quasi-global synoptic view of sea level variations over more than 25 years, providing regional sea level indicators such as trends and accelerations. This study estimates local sea level trend and acceleration uncertainties, deriving local error variance-covariance matrices and confidence intervals. The average local sea level trend uncertainty is found to be 0.83 mm/yr, with values ranging from 0.78 to 1.22 mm/yr, while for accelerations, uncertainties range from 0.057 to 0.12 mm/yr.

Accelerated global glacier mass loss in the early twenty-first century

Romain Hugonnet et al.

Summary: The study found that glaciers around the world are melting at an accelerated rate, with contrasting patterns of mass loss in different geographical regions. Overall, glaciers are losing mass more rapidly, with similar or even larger acceleration rates than Greenland or Antarctic ice sheets taken separately. These findings also highlight the importance of understanding drivers that influence glacier change to predict future changes and mitigate the impacts of sea-level rise.

A reconciled solution of Meltwater Pulse 1A sources using sea-level fingerprinting

Yucheng Lin et al.

Summary: The study suggests that the North American and Eurasian Ice Sheets were the primary contributors to the rapid global sea-level rise event, Meltwater Pulse 1A, during the last deglaciation. The results based on sea-level constraints align with field-based ice-sheet reconstructions, supporting the idea that the freshwater causing the sea-level rise mainly came from North America and Eurasia.
