Ionic Liquid-Based Redox Active Electrolytes for Supercapacitors

Li Sun et al.

Summary: This review introduces the use of ionic liquid (IL) electrolytes combined with redox active species to enhance the energy density of supercapacitors (SCs). The introduction of redox active species contributes to pseudocapacitance and various IL-REs and their energy storage mechanisms are discussed. Future research needs to address current challenges in order to advance this promising field.

The Influence of the Nature of Redox-Active Moieties on the Properties of Redox-Active Ionic Liquids and on Their Use as Electrolyte for Supercapacitors

Philipp S. Borchers et al.

Summary: Two new redox-active ionic liquids based on 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxide and 4,4'-bipyridine are synthesized and characterized in this work. The thermal characteristics of these ionic liquids are evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry. The study also investigates the properties of the neat redox-active ionic liquids and their binary mixtures, while considering their potential use in supercapacitors with activated carbon-based electrodes.
