Reproducibility in the fabrication and physics of moire materials

Chun Ning Lau et al.

Summary: Overlaying two atomic layers with a slight lattice mismatch or at a small rotation angle creates a moire superlattice, which has properties that are markedly modified from (and at times entirely absent in) the 'parent' materials. Moire materials have advanced the study and engineering of strongly correlated phenomena and topological systems in reduced dimensions. Understanding electronic phases like superconductivity necessitates precise control in fabrication, involving the rotational alignment of two atomically thin layers with high angular precision.

Topological Phase Transitions and Evolution of Boundary States Induced by Zeeman Fields in Second-Order Topological Insulators

Zheng-Yang Zhuang et al.

Summary: This work investigates the effect of Zeeman field on two- and three-dimensional time-reversal invariant second-order topological insulators (SOTIs). It is found that Zeeman field can drive various topological phase transitions, including both boundary and bulk types. In boundary topological phase transitions, the Zeeman field can change time-reversal invariant SOTIs to time-reversal symmetry-breaking SOTIs, resulting in a change in the number of robust corner or hinge states. In bulk topological phase transitions, Chern insulator phases with chiral edge states, topological semimetal phases with sharply-localized corner states in two dimensions, and hybrid-order Weyl semimetal phases with the coexistence of surface Fermi arcs and gapless hinge states in three dimensions can be obtained.

Surface Bogoliubov-Dirac cones and helical Majorana hinge modes in superconducting Dirac semimetals

Majid Kheirkhah et al.

Summary: In certain symmetrical three-dimensional Dirac semimetals, both surface Fermi arcs and surface Dirac cones can be found. It has been discovered that a gapped superconducting state with four Bogoliubov-Dirac cones on each side surface can be realized even if the first-order topology of its bulk is trivial. Furthermore, a second-order time-reversal invariant topological superconductor with helical Majorana hinge states can be achieved when the normal state simultaneously contains both surface Fermi arcs and surface Dirac cones.

Intrinsic Time-Reversal-Invariant Topological Superconductivity in Thin Films of Iron-Based Superconductors

Rui-Xing Zhang et al.

Summary: The quasi-two-dimensional thin films of iron-based superconductors have been established as a new high-temperature platform for hosting intrinsic time-reversal-invariant helical topological superconductivity. Experimental results have shown that an applied electric field can serve as a topological switch for helical Majorana edge modes in FeSC thin films.

Higher-order band topology

Biye Xie et al.

Summary: The emergence of higher-order topological insulators with gapless hinge or corner states has expanded our understanding of topological phases. These unconventional TIs have significant contributions to the development of photonic, phononic, and circuit systems, and their discovery has unveiled the hierarchical structure of topological band theory.

Vortex-line topology in iron-based superconductors with and without second-order topology

Majid Kheirkhah et al.

Summary: The study investigates the interplay between second-order topological superconductivity and vortex lines in weak and strong-Zeeman-field regimes. It finds that vortex lines far away from the hinges remain topologically nontrivial in the weakly doped regime, regardless of the presence of second-order topology. However, moving a topological vortex line close to helical Majorana hinge states can trivialize the vortex line and transfer robust Majorana zero modes to the hinges.

Topological crystalline superconductivity in locally noncentrosymmetric CeRh2As2

Kosuke Nogaki et al.

Summary: The recent discovery of superconductivity in CeRh2As2 has elucidated an unusual H-T phase diagram with two superconducting phases. This can be explained by the even-odd parity transition characteristic of locally noncentrosymmetric superconductors, where inversion symmetry is broken at the Ce site. CeRh2As2 represents a class of exotic superconductors with the possibility of topological superconductivity in the odd-parity pair-density-wave state.
