No ensemble averaging below the black hole threshold

Jean-Marc Schlenker et al.

Summary: In the study of AdS/CFT correspondence, the puzzle of amplitudes associated with connected bulk manifolds and disconnected boundaries has been a longstanding mystery. This paper sharpens the puzzle by analyzing a class of observables that do not show effects of ensemble averaging. These observables involve states that are above the ground state by a fixed amount in the large N limit, and are far from being black hole states. The authors explore the example of D=3 and prove that connected solutions of Einstein's equations with disconnected boundaries do not contribute to these observables. The apparent ensemble averaging in some observables is proposed to be a reflection of the chaotic nature of black hole physics and the absence of a large N limit in the Hilbert space describing black holes.

On the questions of asymptotic recoverability of information and subsystems in quantum gravity

Steven B. Giddings

Summary: The question of localizing quantum information in quantum gravity has been a longstanding issue, with the presence of gauge symmetry and gravitational constraints leading to different answers compared to finite quantum systems and local quantum field theory. It has been proposed that solving the constraints by providing a gravitational dressing for field-theory operators modifies their locality properties, potentially explaining holography at a nonperturbative level. Perturbative solutions of the constraints also suggest implications for holography, with the relevance of asymptotic measurements in defining subsystems being a key aspect of the investigation.

Disorder averaging and its UV discontents

Jonathan J. Heckman et al.

Summary: This study presents a detailed realization of the quantum field theory ensembles in D < 4 spacetime dimensions, allowing for a random averaging of coupling constants. The resulting volume, when each member of the ensemble is a conformal field theory with a standard semiclassical holographic dual, can be interpreted as an asymptotically anti-de Sitter space geometry with a distribution of boundary components joined by wormhole configurations. This construction provides a UV completion of the proposal for a high-dimensional Hilbert space for baby universes, while remaining consistent with the proposed swampland constraints.

Self-Adjointness in Klein-Gordon Theory on Globally Hyperbolic Spacetimes

Albert Much et al.

Summary: We prove the essential self-adjointness of the spatial part of the linear Klein-Gordon operator with an external potential on a large class of globally hyperbolic manifolds. The proof combines new results on globally hyperbolic manifolds, the theory of weighted Hilbert spaces, and related advances in functional analysis.

Schrodinger evolution of two-dimensional black holes

Steven B. Giddings

Summary: This paper systematically examines the evolving quantum state of two-dimensional black holes, focusing on the CGHS model and generalizing to higher dimensions. By studying the state's dynamic evolution at intermediate times in the Schrodinger picture, the paper offers insights into gravitational dynamics and the evolution of quantum matter on background geometry. The explicit description of the evolving state provides connections to information theory and potential corrections to unitarize evolution in the presence of new quantum gravity effects.
