Few-photon storage on a second timescale by electromagnetically induced transparency in a doped solid

Marcel Hain et al.

Summary: We demonstrate the experimental storage of light at the single photon level for a long time in a Pr3+:Y2SiO5 crystal using electromagnetically induced transparency. Decoherence control and a filter crystal are used to improve storage efficiency and filter selectivity. The findings have significant implications for implementing true quantum memory in other protocols and media.

Gigahertz-bandwidth optical memory in Pr3+:Y2SiO5

M. Nicolle et al.

Summary: In this experiment, a cryogenically cooled Pr3+ : Y2SiO5 crystal was used to implement a broadband rephasing protocol for the atomic frequency comb (AFC). The study investigated the efficiency of AFC preparation parameters and observed up to 12 rephased temporal modes with a suboptimal AFC.

One-hour coherent optical storage in an atomic frequency comb memory

Yu Ma et al.

Summary: Photon loss in optical fibers hinders long-distance distribution of quantum information on the ground, and the complexity of quantum repeater schemes limits communication distance. Alternative solutions such as transportable quantum memory and quantum-memory-equipped satellites offer promise for global quantum communication.

Elimination of noise in optically rephased photon echoes

You-Zhi Ma et al.

Summary: Photon echo is a fundamental tool for manipulating electromagnetic fields, but is limited by spontaneous emission noise. A proposed noiseless photon-echo protocol based on a four-level atomic system demonstrates high storage fidelity in an optical quantum memory setup using a Eu3+:Y2SiO5 crystal. This technique features spin-wave storage, easy operation, and potential for extension to other physical systems.

Initialization protocol for efficient quantum memories using resolved hyperfine structure

James S. Stuart et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a quantum memory spectral preparation strategy that optimizes memory efficiency and bandwidth in materials such as Er-167(3+):Y2SiO5 in a high-field regime, resolving hyperfine structure. By preparing spectrally isolated absorbing features, an atomic frequency comb is created, and quantum storage of 200-ns pulses is achieved with 22% efficiency. Future experimental improvements aim to reach material limits of O(1)-s spin-state storage, O(100) MHz bandwidth, and >90% efficiency.
