Luminescent Lanthanide Metal Organic Frameworks (LnMOFs): A Versatile Platform towards Organomolecule Sensing

Subham Sahoo et al.

Summary: Global population growth and rapid urbanization have intensified anthropogenic processes, highlighting the importance of selectively detecting organomolecules. Traditional detection methods based on liquid chromatography and electrochemistry are costly and time-consuming, while spectrofluorometric sensing offers a simple, fast, and convenient alternative. Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (LnMOFs) show great promise for accurate organomolecule sensing due to their tunability, functionality, and design ability, with nearly three hundred LnMOFs designed and synthesized for this purpose.

An ultra-high quantum yield Tb-MOF with phenolic hydroxyl as the recognition group for a highly selective and sensitive detection of Fe3+

Yuming Zhao et al.

Summary: This study designed and synthesized a novel luminescent Tb-MOF with high sensitivity and rapid detection of Fe3+ based on the traditional chromogenic reaction between phenolic hydroxyl groups and Fe3+. The Tb-MOF showed excellent selectivity, low detection limit, and ultra-high quantum yield of 94.91% due to the specific recognition of Fe3+ ions by abundant active sites. Through density functional theory calculations, the energy level matching between H2BDC-OH and Tb3+ was confirmed to contribute to the high quantum yield. The Tb-MOF also offered a simple and convenient test paper for detecting Fe3+ without the need for expensive fluorescence instruments, laying a solid foundation for designing novel sensing materials.
