Pyrene-Decoration of a Chromium(0) Tris(diisocyanide) Enhances Excited State Delocalization: A Strategy to Improve the Photoluminescence of 3d6 Metal Complexes

Christina Wegeberg et al.

Summary: Introducing pyrene units into the diisocyanide ligand backbone significantly enhances the luminescence quantum yield and MLCT lifetime of a chromium(0) isocyanide complex by nearly two orders of magnitude. The enlarged pi-conjugation system in the ligand leads to a strongly delocalized MLCT state, reducing nonradiative relaxation despite a redshift of the emission wavelength. Luminescence properties of the complex exhibit a unique solvent polarity-dependent behavior, indicating two competing mechanisms for MLCT deactivation.

Manganese(i) complexes with metal-to-ligand charge transfer luminescence and photoreactivity

Patrick Herr et al.

Summary: Metal complexes with d(6) valence electron configuration often exhibit luminescent metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited states, useful for various applications. Iron(ii) has been suggested as an Earth-abundant alternative, but no iron(ii) complex has been reported to show MLCT emission. In this study, manganese(I) complexes with isocyanide chelate ligands were found to exhibit MLCT luminescence in solution at room temperature, showing promising applications in energy and electron transfer reactions.

Luminescent First-Row Transition Metal Complexes

Christina Wegeberg et al.

Summary: Recent developments in the field of inorganic photophysics and photochemistry indicate a shift towards cheaper and more abundant metals, away from traditional precious and rare elements. Conceptual breakthroughs have expanded the range of elements, particularly those in different oxidation states, that can be used for emissive complexes. New design strategies have led to the discovery of fundamentally new types of 3d-metal-based luminophores and photosensitizers operating in solution at room temperature.

Low power threshold photochemical upconversion using a zirconium(iv) LMCT photosensitizer

Mo Yang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates efficient photochemical upconversion using a Zr(iv) LMCT complex as a triplet photosensitizer and various acceptor/annihilators in THF solutions. The research shows high TTET and TTA processes with impressive record-setting UC efficiencies achieved under optimized conditions. This emphasizes the importance of developing molecular-based triplet photosensitizers based on earth-abundant metals.
