Looking beyond history: tracing the dispersal of the Malaysian complex of crops to Africa

Summary: Research has shown that a Malaysian complex of crops was introduced to Africa in ancient times through the Indian Ocean, but not all at once or along the same route. Instead, these crops arrived in Africa at different times and followed different pathways of introduction to the continent.

Summary: This study reports on the analysis of charred archaeological samples from surface deposits at Nombe rockshelter in the highlands of Papua New Guinea using microCT scanning and Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dating. The results show that five fragments are identified as sweet potato, and two subsamples from the largest fragment yield a date range of 300-148 calBP.
