Thermal Percolation in Well-Defined Nanocomposite Thin Films

Boyce S. Chang et al.

Summary: Thermal percolation, the rapid increase in thermal transport in polymer nanocomposites, is of great interest in thermal management. However, it remains a challenging subject in both experimental and modeling aspects. Previous studies on thermal percolation have mainly focused on high-aspect-ratio, conductive fillers. This study demonstrates that thermal percolation can be achieved even with nonconductive spherical fillers at a low volume fraction. Additionally, the effects of volume fraction, interfacial thermal resistance, and filler conductivity on thermal conductivity are found to deviate from effective medium approximations.

Block copolymer thin films

Changhang Huang et al.

Summary: Block copolymers (BCPs) are a special type of polymeric system with chemically distinct homopolymer blocks tethered together, used in bulk and thin film forms for nanotechnology applications. Progress in tailoring mesoscopic and nanoscopic structures of BCP thin films using external fields relies on precise control of structural orientation, local alignment, and long-range ordering, with conventional polymer field theory and numerical solution schemes playing a key role. Experimental and theoretical insights into the next generation of strategies for obtaining desired BCP thin film patterns and their industrial applications are also provided.

Mesoscale networks and corresponding transitions from self-assembly of block copolymers

Cheng-Yen Chang et al.

Summary: By controlling the solvent evaporation rate for solution casting and utilizing thermal annealing, various network phases were successfully obtained and a new order-order transition pathway was discovered. This finding provides a new approach to acquiring diverse network phases from a simple diblock system by kinetically controlling the self-assembling process.

Superconducting Quantum Metamaterials from High Pressure Melt Infiltration of Metals into Block Copolymer Double Gyroid Derived Ceramic Templates

R. Paxton Thedford et al.

Summary: By using ceramic templates derived from bulk block copolymer self-assembly, a versatile method for synthesizing mesostructured metals is demonstrated, showing emergent quantum-scale phenomena. High-pressure infiltration of bulk block copolymer self-assembly based ceramic templates enables the study of high-quality metals with previously inaccessible architectures, paving the way for block-copolymer derived quantum metamaterials.

Distinctive Dielectric Permittivity of Hierarchical Nanostructures with Ordered Nanoparticle Networks Self-Assembled from AB-g-NP/AC Block Copolymer Mixtures

Zhanwen Xu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the high permittivity of hybrid nanostructures designed with grafted nanoparticles and diblock copolymers, which self-assemble into ordered networks in the polymer matrix. The ordered nanoparticle networks provide pathways for concentrating electric fields, resulting in improved permittivity and potentially leading to the development of hierarchically ordered functional nanocomposites.

Phase Behavior of PS-(PS-b-P2VP)3 Miktoarm Star Copolymer

Yeseong Seo et al.

Summary: The phase behavior of polystyrene-(polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine))(3) miktoarm star copolymer was investigated, with the volume fraction of the PS block (f(PS)) and the chain asymmetry of the PS chain (t) found to significantly influence the phase behavior. Different f(PS) and t values resulted in the formation of distinct structures, consistent with theoretical predictions.

One-dimensional hairy CNT/polymer/Au nanocomposites via ligating with amphiphilic crosslinkable block copolymers

Zili Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a strategy using amphiphilic crosslinkable block copolymers as nanoreactors was developed to fabricate hairy 1D carbon nanotube (CNT)/polymer/Au nanocomposites with tunable length, allowing for the tailored plasmonic property. This method circumvents the alteration and/or destruction of intrinsic properties of CNT and demonstrates improved catalytic activity over Au nanoparticle counterparts. This approach can be extended to construct other appealing low-dimensional hybrid nanomaterials for various applications.

A simulation study of the self-assembly of ABC star terpolymers confined between two parallel surfaces

Zhiyao Liu et al.

Summary: The phase behavior of ABC star terpolymers confined between two identical parallel surfaces was systematically studied using a simulated annealing method. It was found that the self-assembled structure of a phase is largely controlled by the arm-length ratio x, while changes in the interfacial interaction strength ratio can shift the x-window for each phase. The orientation of a confined phase depends on the effective surface preference, which is influenced by the interfacial interaction strength ratio, surface preference, and entropic preference. In cases with neutral or weak effective surface preference, phases with a perpendicular orientation are typically observed, while phases with either a perpendicular orientation or outermost wetting-layers can be frequently observed in the presence of strong effective surface preference under certain circumstances.
