Eliminating poverty through development: The dynamic evolution of multidimensional poverty in rural China

Yangyang Shen et al.

Summary: This paper measures intertemporal multidimensional poverty in rural China from 1988 to 2018 and finds that multidimensional poverty declines steadily when measured by income poverty approach. There is demographic and regional heterogeneity in rural areas, with elderly poverty, child poverty, and poverty in the western Chinese region being the most prominent. Income poverty and multidimensional poverty have a low overlap ratio and show intertemporal synchronisation over time. The paper suggests developing a suitable multidimensional poverty identification framework and formulating targeted development strategies in the new poverty alleviation governance system, with increased focus on special groups such as children and the elderly.
