A multicenter cohort study of early complications after cranioplasty: results of the German Cranial Reconstruction Registry

Thomas Sauvigny et al.

Summary: The authors analyzed 502 patients in a prospective multicenter database to evaluate early surgery-related complications after cranioplasty. They found that 46% of patients used autologous bone flaps for CP, with titanium, polyetheretherketone, and polymethylmethacrylate being the most common engineered materials.

Long-term complications and implant survival rates after cranioplastic surgery: a single-center study of 392 patients

Henrik Giese et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed 392 patients who underwent cranioplasty surgery between 2004 and 2014, identifying young age, presence of multidrug-resistant bacteria, and cerebrospinal fluid shunt as risk factors for postoperative complications. The use of titanium miniplates for cranioplasty fixation was associated with reduced complication rates and longer implant survival time.

Summary: The study found that for the trauma subgroup, early cranioplasty was associated with a higher rate of postoperative complications compared to late cranioplasty. Greater attention to preoperative planning and postoperative monitoring is emphasized for this higher-risk population.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed data from 74 patients who underwent cranioplasty with cryopreserved autologous bone after decompressive craniectomy. It found that pediatric patients had a higher rate of hydrocephalus compared to adults, and the overall rate of bone flap resorption was 21.6% with a postoperative infection rate of 6.8%.

First Report of a Multicenter Prospective Registry of Cranioplasty in the United Kingdom and Ireland

Daniel M. Fountain et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the outcomes of cranial reconstruction procedures in the UK and Ireland, finding that titanium was the most common material used for cranioplasty. The study also revealed that the main indications for craniectomy were traumatic brain injury, cerebral infarct, and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. No mortalities were reported within 30 days post-operation, but 4% of patients experienced wound infections.

Cranioplasty with Autologous Bone Flaps Cryopreserved with Dimethylsulphoxide: Does Tissue Processing Matter

Vicente Mirabet et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed data from 74 patients who underwent cranioplasty with cryopreserved autologous bone after decompressive craniectomy. The study found that pediatric patients had a significantly higher rate of hydrocephalus compared to adults, and the overall rate of bone flap resorption was 21.6%. Surgical site infection after cranioplasty was detected in 6.8% of patients, and there was no correlation between infection and previous microbiological-positive culture during processing. Vancomycin was the only antibiotic detected in the supernatant where the bone was incubated.
