Sustainable pilot-scale production of a Salicornia oil, its conversion to certified aviation fuel, and techno-economic analysis of the related biorefinery

Paco Laveille et al.

Summary: The SEAS project in Abu Dhabi integrates aquaculture ponds with fields of Salicornia and mangrove to clean waste seawater, providing a sustainable solution for food security in desert regions. It produces economically viable fuels from biomass using non-arable lands and non-drinkable water, with a potential for commercial success in biofuels production and aviation fuel blending.

The current techno-economic, environmental, policy status and perspectives of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)

Md Fahim Shahriar et al.

Summary: This review examines the current status of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technology worldwide and explores the impact of organizational initiatives and policies on the widespread use of SAF in the aviation industry. The environmental aspects of SAF use are critically analyzed, and a comparative analysis of bio-conversion methods is conducted. The study identifies hurdles and areas requiring further research, but highlights the significant potential of SAF in reducing CO2 emissions from the aviation sector and contributing to climate change solutions.

Evaluation of dry corn ethanol bio-refinery concepts for the production of sustainable aviation fuel

Abid H. Tanzil et al.

Summary: The evaluation of biorefinery concepts for sustainable aviation fuels was based on a typical Dry Grind Corn Ethanol Mill, aiming to reduce costs and identify environmental benefits through integration with existing infrastructure. Among the studied technologies, ATJ produced in repurposed facilities showed the highest cost reduction, while some scenarios had lower GHG emissions compared to greenfield units.

Strategic assessment of sustainable aviation fuel production technologies: Yield improvement and cost reduction opportunities

Abid H. Tanzil et al.

Summary: The aviation industry has been studying strategies for producing sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) for over a decade, with a focus on detailed techno-economic analyses (TEA) of six SAF production technologies. Triglyceride-based Hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) emerged as the most economically competitive option, while lignocellulose-based technologies showed lower fuel yields and higher costs due to the high oxygen content of initial feedstock. Efforts are needed to improve SAF yields from lignocellulosic materials in order to achieve cost targets. Proposed integrated biomass/natural gas hybridized concepts could potentially result in more cost-effective SAF production.

Life-cycle assessment of an industrial direct air capture process based on temperature-vacuum swing adsorption

Sarah Deutz et al.

Summary: Direct air capture technology can achieve negative emissions, but its benefits depend on the energy source. Large-scale deployment of direct air capture is not limited by material and energy availability, but the production of amines for adsorbents needs to be scaled up. Energy source and efficiency are crucial for achieving negative emissions and low-carbon fuels with direct air capture.

Break-even price and carbon emissions of carinata-based sustainable aviation fuel production in the Southeastern United States

Asiful Alam et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the break-even price and carbon emissions of SAF derived from Carinata, and found that it could provide a 65% relative carbon savings compared to conventional aviation fuel. However, the price of Carinata-based SAF is higher than traditional fuel without subsidies. Therefore, continued policy support is needed to promote its manufacturing and distribution in the Southeastern United States.
