Formation, Detection, and Function of Oxygen Vacancy in Metal Oxides for Solar Energy Conversion

Zhiliang Wang et al.

Summary: Oxygen vacancy (V-O) is a common defect in metal oxides that provides unique physiochemical properties. Understanding its formation, structure, and function remains challenging, highlighting the importance of studying defect formation energy and structure in V-O research. This review critically revisits the electronic property and structure changes of MOs upon the generation of Vo, providing insights for future research directions in rational control of V-O in MOs for solar energy conversion.

Machine Learning Guided Dopant Selection for Metal Oxide-Based Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting: The Case Study of Fe2O3 and CuO

Zhiliang Wang et al.

Summary: By using a machine learning model, the authors successfully predicted the doping effect of metal dopants into hematite and identified critical parameters. The model was further validated experimentally and suggested that the chemical state, metal-oxygen bond formation enthalpy, and ionic radius are important factors for improving charge separation and transfer. The ML-guided selection criteria were also extended to copper oxide-based photoelectrodes, resulting in improved charge separation and transfer.

Vacancy defect engineering of BiVO4 photoanodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting

Songcan Wang et al.

Summary: Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is a promising photoanode material with advantages such as visible light absorption, good chemical stability, nontoxic feature, and low cost. However, its performance is limited by short hole diffusion length and poor electron transport properties, which have been significantly improved by vacancy defect engineering in recent years.

Role of oxygen vacancy in metal oxide based photoelectrochemical water splitting

Zhiliang Wang et al.

Summary: Oxygen vacancies play a crucial role in the optimization of photoelectrodes for PEC water splitting, affecting light absorption, charge separation, and surface reaction kinetics. Although the presence of oxygen vacancies may increase recombination, recent research has shown their beneficial impact on PEC performance, contrary to previous understanding. A comprehensive analysis of oxygen vacancies in metal oxide photoelectrodes is essential for achieving high efficiency in PEC.
