A Superconducting-Material-Based Maglev Generator Used for Outer-Space

Zheng Ma et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of superconducting materials, specifically in a superconducting magnetic levitation magnetoelectric generator (SMMG), to harvest energy in dark environments. The SMMG converts mechanical impacts to electricity and operates at low temperatures. This technology is well-suited for powering sensors and communication devices in outer space, especially in places without sunlight.

An Origami Continuum Robot Capable of Precise Motion Through Torsionally Stiff Body and Smooth Inverse Kinematics

Junius Santoso et al.

Summary: In this work, we propose a continuum manipulator that provides passive torsional stiffness through an origami-inspired modular design, addressing the twisting issue typically present in traditional continuum robots. Our origami continuum module is significantly stronger, lighter, and more flexible than similar-size silicone rubber modules. By utilizing optimization-based methods, we ensure smooth motion and minimize vibrations in the multi-segment origami continuum manipulator. Additionally, we develop grow-to-shape algorithms to plan for complex robot insertion motions along tortuous paths, showcasing various applications for pick-and-place, inspection/exploration, and robotic art.

Surface Actuation and Sensing of a Tensegrity Structure Using Robotic Skins

Joran W. Booth et al.

Summary: Tensegrity robots, consisting of solid rods and tensile cables, are flexible and robust, suitable for uneven and unpredictable environments. Robotic skins can be attached to measure and control the shape of a tensegrity structure, transforming it into an active tensegrity robot capable of precise motions. This hardware and algorithm platform allows for surface-driven actuation and intrinsic state estimation, enabling tensegrity robots to perform tasks in real-world environments.

A Variable Curvature Model for Multi-Backbone Continuum Robots to Account for Inter-Segment Coupling and External Disturbance

Yuyang Chen et al.

Summary: This study proposed a variable curvature model for multi-backbone continuum robots based on the Cosserat rod theory, focusing on factors affecting the robot's shape and deriving a compact formula for real-time control by simplifying constraints. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed model outperformed the constant curvature model in terms of accuracy and computational efficiency.
