Facile activation of lithium slag for the hydrothermal synthesis of zeolite A with commercial quality and high removal efficiency for the isotope of radioactive 90Sr

Binyu Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a method for activating lithium slag and synthesizing highly crystalline zeolite A with excellent sorption capacity, fast kinetics, wide pH range, and high selectivity for Sr-90 isotope. The obtained zeolite A exceeds the water absorption standard of the first-class grade of zeolite A in a Chinese national standard and shows potential for efficient removal of Sr2+ from aqueous solutions.

Converging Cooperative Functions into the Nanospace of Covalent Organic Frameworks for Efficient Uranium Extraction from Seawater

Mengjie Hao et al.

Summary: This study presents a new strategy for efficient extraction of uranium from seawater by combining the functions of adsorption and photocatalysis in covalent organic frameworks (COFs). The developed COFs demonstrated exceptional performance in sequestering and reducing uranyl from natural seawater under visible light irradiation, offering promising candidates for efficient uranium extraction.

Efficient separation of strontium radionuclides from high-salinity wastewater by zeolite 4A synthesized from Bayer process liquids

Ivana Smiciklas et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal of Sr radionuclides using the zeolite Z4A produced from the Bayer process liquids, showing fast and efficient removal with high sorption capacity. The selectivity of Z4A decreased in the order Sr>Ca>K>Mg>Na, and Z4A exhibited high stability in retaining radionuclides, making it a cost-effective and selective medium for Sr removal, especially in high salinity effluents.

A Novel Hollow Carbon@MnO2 Electrospun Nanofiber Adsorbent for Efficient Removal of Pb2+ in Wastewater

Li Wenyan et al.

Summary: A novel hollow carbon@MnO2 composite nanofiber adsorbent with high adsorption capacity for Pb2+ was prepared by combining electrospinning and carbonization. The maximum adsorption capacity reached 460.83 mg/g, and the nanofibers showed good recyclability and removal efficiency after 5 adsorption-desorption cycles. The removal efficiency for Pb2+ from real wastewater could reach 94.37%, demonstrating promising potential in actual wastewater treatment.

Relationship between zeolite structure and capture capability for radioactive cesium and strontium

Songhyeon Kwon et al.

Summary: Zeolites with high Si/Al ratios exhibit enhanced affinity to Cs+ ions, while zeolites containing 8-membered rings show extra-high selectivity for Cs+. In contrast, the affinity of Sr2+ ions to zeolites decreases as the Si/Al ratio increases, and Sr2+ exchange is less dependent on zeolite structures due to strong hydration. The kinetics of Sr2+ exchange is slower than that of Cs+ exchange due to the bulkiness of hydrated Sr2+ ions, with larger micropore channels beneficial for faster exchange kinetics.

Selective Separation of Radiocesium from Complex Aqueous Matrices Using Dual Solid-Phase Extraction Systems

Ismail M. M. Rahman et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a technique for selective separation of Cs from water using dual solid-phase extraction systems. Various materials were evaluated for selectivity and retention behavior towards Cs and other competing ions, with operating parameters optimized for maximum Cs removal. The dual SPE system successfully separated and preconcentrated radioactive Cs from complex matrices, as demonstrated with contaminated water samples from Fukushima, Japan.
